Hi Brian I appaer to be havung problems in uploading documents, as Tiff image they are too large, but can't understand why they upload as a jpeg as the others have.
Two of my grandfathers brothers fought in Sicily during the war. Both were in the 2nd Bn. Inniskilling fusiliers and both recieved the MM within a month of each other. Thomas(Tommy) Moore recieved his medal during the battle of Catinia at Lemon Bridge on Simeto river (Oct. 1943). William recieved his medal for action on the Paterno-Belpasso road (Nov. 1943). Can anyone flesh out the actions of the 2nd Bn. during the Sicily campagain? Both men were called back into action for Korea and unfortunately William was killed. Are there any forums or sites around for the Koeran conflict? I have attached a copy of a comic in which Tommy's story was featured,I hope it turns out ok. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2893&stc=1&d=1151059001 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2894&stc=1&d=1151058570 Brian Ciao Brian C, I am an italian writer and I look a for document, photo, stories about Sicily 1943. I live near PATERNO' (Catania) and Primosole Bridge is to 10 km. Have you photos on Paterno' or Sferro or near towns?
Hello Ezio, Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the area but I would love to visit the area. I had taken a break from my research recently but the recent interest from members on the site wil maybe inspire me to start digging again. Regards, Brian
Hi Brian, eventually got to up upload the Three Pimples documents, hope they are useful. Regards James
Hi Brian First picture from David Coles book of Lemon Bridge, next is my comparison, taken from approx 'B' Companies position on the bank, the final pic is looking to the left of the bridge to where 'D' Company crossed the river. It shows the width of the actual river and the depth below the actual banks. Hope ypou had luck in getting Sir David's book, if not try Abe books. Regards James
Hi James, I have been trying to locate the exact position of Lemon bridge from various maps. I have attached my best guess about where it is. Do you know if the modern bridge shown in your photograph is at the same location as the Inniskilllings Lemon Bridge? Cheers, Jont
Hello Jont I am almost certain that the location is correct, I was was navigating with the Touring Club Italiano 1:200 000 series map, and everything seems to fit the bill, it being a 'main' route, the geography of the ground, a farm located to rear right, Three other bridges existed between Lemon and Primosole, each given the name of a fruit, but none exist today, but one small one according to the same map, but not near to the location. I have taken a digi picture from a map, I'am sure showing 'Lemon', that I located in the Wilts war diary, I think it was, and will post when get down to uploading ALL the files. Regards James
Hi James, If you get a chance, could you please copy the senond page of the report of the Lemon Bridge action again (Paras 10 - 12 I think). The previous post duplicated the first page. Thanks, Jont
Hi, the real position isn't the Castellana farm, is about 2 km before. In 1943 the bridge was after Dittaino fork, after 1950 when the river was harnessed the bridge was destroyed and the fork was moved after bridge. I find some rest of bridge: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/ww2-battlefields-today/16519-sicily-after-65-years-13.html
jamesmurrow , I know this was a very long time ago but could you supply page 2 of Lt Col O'Brien Twohig's report on Lemon Bridge. You shared page 1 twice but missed out page 2.
