Shetland - Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

    Anyone have any information as to which Battalions/ Divisions of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders served in Shetland during WW2, and what dates they were present- many thanks

    11th (Argyllshire and Dumbarton) Battalion, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise’s) (T.A.)

    HQ Shetland Defences, OSDEF – 22 September 1941 to 14 October 1942
    The Battalion moved to Fochabers. It was then sent to Sumburgh in the Shetlands as part of OSDEF on airfield and coast defence duties. It remained at Sumburgh until the first half of October 1942.

    Here are some other Highland and Lowland battalions that served in Lerwick.

    10th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) (T.A.)


    HQ Shetland Defences – 2 November 1941 to 12 October 1942
    The battalion served at Lerwick in the Shetlands.

    228th Infantry Brigade – 12 October 1942 to 2 December 1942
    The brigade HQ was formed from the HQ Shetland Defences on October 12th, 1942 and the battalion remained with the brigade at Lerwick.

    7th (Fife) Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) (T.A.)

    HQ Shetlands Area – 1 June 1940 to 26 September 1941
    It left the 28th Brigade and was sent to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. It served there until September 1941, when it returned to the mainland.

    2nd Battalion, The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment)

    HQ Orkney and Shetlands Defence Force (OSDEF) – 28 May 1942 to 12 October 1942
    It was reformed from the 12th Battalion on May 28th, 1942 at Lerwick in the Shetlands. It had two companies at Lerwick, one at Scalloway and another at Tingwall. The later two moved to Voe and Scatsla. The carrier platoon was at Brae and Laxo.


    228th Infantry Brigade – 12 October 1942 to 17 November 1942
    It came under the 228th Infantry Brigade in the Orkneys and Shetlands on October 12th.


    227th Infantry Brigade – 18 November 1942 to 15 March 1943
    It joined the 227th Infantry Brigade in Orkneys and Shetlands on November 18th, 1942. It left the Shetlands and moved to Caithness on December 18th, 1942 with HQ at Thurso. One company was at Barrogill and another at Castle of Mey. The battalion left there on March 10th, 1943 and moved to St. Andrews.

    12th Battalion, The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment)

    HQ Shetlands District – 21 October 1941 to 28 May 1942
    It left the brigade on October 21st, 1941 and embarked for the Shetlands. Two days later it was located at Lerwick under the Shetlands District. The battalion was first selected to convert to the 2nd Battalion on January 23rd, 1942. It was disbanded on May 28th, 1942 and the personnel were reconstituted as the 2nd Battalion on the same day.
