Shall we close the Holocaust section of the forum?

Looking at the date of the original and honestly asked 'six million' query, we must be working to a three and a quarter year plan.
I'm impressed... Not sure I was even a mod then.

Sometimes there's a very fine line between what's taboo, and what can be asked. But it's hopefully possible to lean towards allowing 'odd' queries as long as they stay reasonably sensible... and not a 'what-if' (Had forgotten they definitely aren't on.).

PS. - It was a lot of Austins Rich, lots and lots and lots of 'em.

    Hi all
It is an emotive issue, but the truth needs to be told.

The Number, be it six million or otherwise, provoked the world wide statement, "Never Again". Human nature, being what it is, makes that very unlikely.

With Cambodia, Bosnia, Darfur and Rwanda now passing into history it appears that the counting will never end.

On the risk of being banned I will give my opinion. Why does a Moderator starts a thread questioning the number of Jews killed(Murdered) in WW2?

    Ronald,
Just because I'm a Mod doesn't mean I know everything does it?
The original question was asked 3 years ago, have a look at the first post, it's dated 2007.
In my posts in the '6 million ' thread it says I don't know much about the Holocaust.
which to be honest I don't apart from the basics.
Until I got a PC & got online in 2004 I didn't even realise how big the denial movement was, as my interest is the British Army in WW1 & WW2. I knew that the Holocaust happened & that was about it.
When Googling various sites I ended up on some denial sites which made me want to ask questions to improve my knowledge about things I'd read on them.
In this thread I said the greatest amount of hassle comes from the holocaust section as it attracts dodgey members more than any other section.

    Just cos I'm a Mod doesn't mean I'm not a Member too.
Members ask questions about subjects they don't know much about.

I also like to discuss matters about the forum with members of the forum to see what we can do it improve it or if it's not broken leave it.

Of course you won't be banned.
    No worries about that.

Owen I'm only answering your question as I have not read the whole thread yet.
Yes we should be able to discuss the Holocaust. As you say original setup was for a commonwealth slanted forum. Many commonwealth folk died in the related camps. Many British and commonwealth troops were held as pow at Austwish alone. Ergo no way should any linkage be unavailable for comment by members.

Please leave the Holocaust forum open.
It would be wrong to remove it however if there are comments which appear unsuitable then these should be removed.

I suggest that when removed the poster should be told why and, to show openness, a simple comment could be put on the forum saying something like "A comment here has been removed due to unsuitable comment" otherwise you are leaving yourself open to accusations of censorship which would be wrong.

    Keep up the excellent work!!

Please leave the thread live because it is good for newbies to add comments when they find us. I agree with ww2ni that a comment should be put on inappropriate entries...

I agree that the topic should remain; however, I can sense the amount of time that the Mods may have to spend policing that particular part of the forum. By the way: Thanks! We seem to be fairly level headed (I think/hope) and I'm sure that if someone steps out of line, the Mods will know about it at the earliest opportunity. It is difficult to have an inclusive WW2 forum if there are parts of the war that are off limits. However, when I think about the recently rescinded ban on SAD on GWF,I can understand why Mods would want to ban some things.

Shot at Dawn threads on the Great War Forum were always very contentious, with firmly held views never changing, and there was at least one member who seemed to post only on that subject, and was usually aggressive in his tone.

A particularly acrimonious thread culminated in Chris, the Forum owner, being asked for the name of his solicitor. He understandably decided that he didn't need this and banned the subject. A change of ownership, which came after the men in question were pardoned, has resulted in the ban being lifted. Possibily as a result of the pardons, subsequent threads have been friendly in tone, and mainly requesting information on individuals rather than discussing the ethics of the situation.

I for one would not like to se a ban on any particular WW2 related subject.

I know from past experience that certain subjects within WW2 Histora are guaranteed to cause polarisation of views.

These subjects are Politics, Religion, The bombing of Dresden, The Holocaust and many more.

I agree and have already stated that this may cause some extra work for our moderators, but to close down the forum to certain debates would be extremely damaging to the excellent name of this Superb Forum.

Only the forum members would be the losers.

    Regards
    Tom

Must add my NO to the impressive list.
Has been a great discussion and a lot of thoughtfull insite.

The only thing I like to see banned are the sarcastic and personal barbs which sometimes appear.
Still I suppose you will always get Turkeys trying to fly like Eagles.

Keep up the GREAT work mods.

    Cheers Rob
