I am hoping to find information on Sgt James Varty who was flying in a Halifax of 640 Squadron, shot down over France 19 April 1944. I am aware that he became a POW. I would be most grateful for any information and in particular a Chorley lookup. John

Details from RAF Bomber Command Losses Vol.5 - W R. Chorley 18-19 April 1944 640 Squadron Halifax III LW722 C8-S Op. Terguier Took off from Leconfield at 2101 hours to bomb rail facilities. Last heard on W/T at 003 hours when some 14 km south west of Dieppe. At the time it is believed the crew were homebound. Subsequently, their Halifax was hit by flak, slightly north of Dieppe. It is reported that Sgt. Meyer RCAF lived for two hours after the crash. He is buried in Grandcourt War Cemetery, some 30 km east of Dieppe, as are the others who died. Sgt.
