ramacal: Sorry to drag you back to Posts #10 and #16, but I think I have found the link for HTH Whitcombe and Sevenoaks, so the KTH is most likely an error.....
HTH Whitcombe.... Killed in Action 13th January 1946.... which is AFTER when the War against Japan had ended, so what was the "Killed in Action" with? Japanese who had refused to surrender or Communist dissidents rebelling against Dutch rule?

Name: WHITCOMBE, HUGH TEMPLETON HAWKES. Rank: Major
Regiment/Service: Royal Artillery. Unit Text: 145 (The Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Regt.
Age: 26. Date of Death: 11/01/1946. Service No: 86407
Additional information: Son of Eric Aubrey Hawkes and Nancy Templeton Whitcombe, of Wallingford, Berkshire. B.A. (Oxon).
    Grave/Memorial Reference: 5. L. 3. Cemetery: JAKARTA WAR CEMETERY

Killed in Action January 13 1946, in Java. Major Hugh Templeton Hawkes Whitcombe R.A. (Berkshire Yeomanry) younger son of Mr & Mrs EAH Whitcombe, Woodside, Sevenoaks, in his 27th year.

Name: Hugh Whitcombe. Given Initials: H T H. Rank: Major. Death Date: 11 Jan 1946. Number: 86407. Birth Place: Lanarkshire. Residence: Kent. Branch at Enlistment: Royal Artillery. Theatre of War: Netherlands East Indies. Regiment at Death: Royal Artillery. Branch at Death: Royal Artillery.

    The War Graves Photographic Project

    The London Gazette, 30th June 1939 p4451
The undermentioned to be 2nd Lts effective 30th June 1939: - ..............Hugh Templeton Hawkes WHITCOMBE.

Supplement to The London Gazette 29th January 1946: .......The undermentioned 2nd Lts from emerg. commns. (except where otherwise stated) to be Lts. 30th Jan 1946 with seniority as shown.....
..... War Subs. Lt. Hugh Templeton Hawkes WHITCOMBE (86407) 25th September 1941.

Supplement to The London Gazette Friday 1st March 1946...........
... The notifn. regarding 2nd Lt (War Subs Lt) Hugh Templeton Hawkes Whitcombe (86407) dated 29th Jan 1946 is hereby cancelled.

So, a bit of confusion about Date of Death with UK 1939-45 Roll of Honour showing 11th January...
Also no actual confirmation as to his rank of Major, presumably Acting or Temporary, and then his appointment as a Lieutenant effective 1941 is cancelled AFTER his death!! Sounds like penny pinching on pension payout to me!

This has all resurfaced due to a Visitor Message from a lady whose father served with Major Templeton when he was killed. As yet, I haven't established what he was in action against, presumably a Japanese unit that hadn't accepted the Emperors order to cease fighting....?

    Hi KB,

There is a war diary for 145 Field Regt which runs from Jan to May 1946. I'll be visiting Kew at the beginning of November, so I'll look this one up. Thanks for posting on this and I'll let you know the outcome.

Would the lady who posted the VM like a copy of that particular war diary for 1946.

    Regards - Rob

    Hi KB,

Templeton was killed in an ambush along with a number of others. At this time, they would have been fighting the Indonesians who wanted independence from the Netherlands. His rank is stated as Major and he was killed on 11/1/46.

Copy of the war diary page is attached.

    Hi Nicks. Good catch.

I'm inclined to agree with you about the air raid scenario. Using Geoff's search engine, I found another 16 men killed same date, same unit on CWGC.

This was indeed an air raid. I have a copy of the mortuary record for your man, which I will upload next week if you are interested.

The men were in their billet, at 26 Highbury Grove N5, on the junction of the road to Aberdeen Lane, when the bomb struck.

The men were identified by the MO of the unit, who had travelled up from their base unit at Woodberry Down. Many of the casualties could only be identified by parts of their uniform, or items in pockets etc.

    Hi Susan,

It's about the WW1 element of the memorial, about which I have no information. I have e-mailed him however, to bring his attention to the WW2 guys researched on this thread, in case he starts a project on the war dead from this period.
