    HMS WARSPITE

QUEEN ELIZABETH-Class battleship ordered from HM Dockyard, Portsmouth after approval of design in June 1912. The ship was laid down on 31st October 1912 and launched on 26th November 1913. She was the sixth RN warship to bear this name which was introduced in 1956 and last used for a cruiser of 1844 which was sold in 1905. This warship gave a most notable service, which began in March 1915. Her build cost was £2,524,148, excluding items such as guns and wireless equipment. In WWI she was present at the Battle of Jutland and in WWII received considerable renown as shown in the following Chronology. In March 1935 HMS WARSPITE was taken in hand for reconstruction at Portsmouth and was the first of her class to undergo an extensive modernisation. Work done included modifications to her 15" armament to increase the elevation possible and therefore range attainable. Other changes were made to her secondary armament and improved anti-aircraft arrangement were fitted. Provision was made for carrying four aircraft and two hangars were fitted. The most distinctive change made was the change of the forward structure which was redesigned. Work was completed in March 1937 and she rejoined the Fleet later that year. For details of original design and of the modernisation see BRITISH BATTLESHIPS by Alan Raven and John Roberts. Following a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings Campaign in March 1942 the ship was adopted by the members of the London Stock Exchange who maintained an interest in her ship's company and her achievements throughout the war.

DSO Citation - Awarded 5 October 1944 (Posthumous)

On the 15th March 1944 at MS100 in the ? Hills, It was essential to put in an immediate attack in order to restore the position. There was only a short time to recce the attack against unknown enemy opposition. The first assault was checked by intense LMG & Mortar fire.

Capt Martin although embarrassed by wounds in the face and shoulder led a second assault which drove the enemy from their trenches. The enemy who fled left 15 dead & arms and ammunition of all descriptions in their trenches. It was undoubtedly the utter fearlessness and complete disregard of personal danger displayed by their commander which inspired the men to make an immediate second assault in the face of intense fire & thus restore the position which it was essential to do before dark.

On the 17th March, Capt Martin, who still in spite of his wounds remained in command of his company lead two immediate counter attacks on the enemy, who had attacked and gained a foothold in the position. The result of these attacks were to inflict such losses on the enemy that he became pinned and was dealt with at leisure. Capt Martin only desisted in his efforts when he was wounded severely for the second time. The outstanding gallantry and skill and leadership displayed by this officer on both occasions under unusually difficult circumstances & in the face of intense fire & hand to hand fighting, resulted in our forces capturing and retaining positions the loss of which would have led to a very difficult situation.

Details of the raid upon which E H Moss probably lost his life. (61 Squadron were flying Avro Lancasters at the time of his death and were based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire):-
    31 March 1945

Hamburg: 469 aircraft - 361 Lancasters, 100 Halifaxes, 8 Mosquitos - of Nos 1, 6 and 8 Groups attempted to attack the Blohm & Voss shipyards, where the new types of U-boats were being assembled, but the target area was completely cloud-covered. The local report describes 'considerable damage' to houses, factories, energy supplies and communications over a wide area of southern Hamburg and Harburg. 8 Lancasters and 3 Halifaxes were lost, a number being victims of an unexpected intervention by the Luftwaffe day-fighter force. This was Bomber Command's last double-figure aircraft loss of the war from a raid on one city.

    DFC Citation 1944

From the London Gazette of 24 March 1944

Acting Squadron Leader Edward Henry Moss (106228),
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 61 Squadron.
This officer has completed very many sorties and on' 5 occasions has attacked "Berlin. - On one of these sorties,, when returning from the German capital, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire. The front and mid-upper turrets were damaged, the flaps and the tail trim were rendered unserviceable and a tyre on one of the landing wheels was punctured but Squadron Leader Moss brought his aircraft safely back to an airfield and effected a safe landing. This officer has displayed great leadership, skill and courage, setting a fine example to all.

    Quote from Wisden

“MOSS, SQUADRON-LEADER E. H., D.F.C., who was killed on active service in March 1944, aged 32, played in the Malvern eleven from 1928-30. Captain in his last two years, he headed the batting averaged with 60.90 in 1930, his highest innings being 169. An admirable bat, with free scoring ability and very smart in the field, he started at Oxford with 109 in the Freshmen's match, but did not maintain that form when tried in matches for the University, and failed to get his Blue. He played rackets for Malvern and represented Oxford at golf for four years. A master at Radley College from 1936 he joined the Wiltshire Regiment on the outbreak of war and reached the rank of Captain, but joined the R.A.F. in 1941.”

I know the War Memorial inscription is clearly a KTH Whitcombe,

but possibly there was a misread when being prepared?
I found this man on the CWGC site,

    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

but needs someone to establish any Sevenoaks connection...
No NV Brown with Royal Navy in UK or other countries, except 16 month boy killed in Bath. There are 2 N Browns but neither have NoK details.

Can't help either with Morgan or Borrett, no casualty with QORWK. Maybe BARRETT?
sorry can't help with either of the S L Smiths, as to which has Sevenoaks connection.

PS For Everitt on HMS Martin, what was the date of HMS Punjabi sinking? If HMS Punjabi sank in 1943, HMS Martin sank in 1942...
Also complement of HMS Welshman is shown as 148 for a light cruiser as against 200 plus on destroyers. Did they take off a large proportion of the crew to give space for the resupply runs?

Thanks for looking for missing info on some of those commemorated.

I've checked again and the site I got the original information about the Punjabi showed it as 1943. It was sunk in 1942 and some survivors were indeed rescued by HMS Martin.

Sorry, can't answer the question regarding the number of men on the Welshman.
