Hi Where or who would be best to have a look at my Grandfathers war records to try and help me get his proper war diaries.
He served in Italy and North Africa.

If you edit your first post above then you can also [I think] edit the thread title and it would be worth adding your GF's name, unit and number so that others with knowledge can contribute as well, rather than seeming like a general records thread if you follow my drift

My Grandfather's photos, REME, Anzio, Rome, etc

Hopefully you can upload copy records here in order to get some help with interpretation and war diaries.

    Hi Ped61,

Thanks for sharing, I've just had a glance through, it looks like your grandfather had an interesting service. Like mine he was in the REME in the Italy campaign. I will take a longer look and see if I can help during the week.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Unless you are in a position to make a personal visit to U.K. National Archives to read the WD’s TD has highlighted above your best bet would be to contact either of the below members who offer a look up and copy service at a fraction of the cost NA will charge you for copies.

Just click on below forum member names and send them a message to ask for a quote -

    Drew5233 or Lee PsyWar.Org

Just had a look he did in the Cameronians as a rifleman.
I am glad he moved eventually to the R.E.M.E .

    Hi Ped,

For my research I did a couple of things, I got the REME archivist to look at it and he translated it to something more like a story, there is a fee but it was worth it.
    Research - REME Museum

Then I got all the war diaries copied, Steve has already suggested earlier on this thread who could help and TD has already done some work on some of the diaries needed for you!

War Diary Search Engine - www.arcre.com

    Good luck!

    Hi Peter,

I was having a look at your Grandad's service history trying to see what diaries you would need to get. I have drawn a blank on the 545 Heavy recovery section, but noted they were re-designated toi the 687 in April 1944. The Order of battle (basically all the units involved in a theatre) has them in Rome in October 1944, picture attached, linked to this thread REME: Order of Battle: CMF, October 1944

The war diary for 1945 is here Recovery Sections: 687 Sec. | The National Archives

I have drawn a bit of a blank on finding any stuff on the 545, which should cover 1944, there may be other clues for example in the other pages on your grandad's record. needs some more investigation!

    Cheers

    Colin

The DME war diary for April 1944 confirms the re-designation from 545 to 687
