I have been advised by several group members to apply for my Grandad's service records. The thing is, I am 4th in-line so to speak. The eldest member of the family & I are not in contact ( & that won't change) Therefore, I can't provide my Grandad's death certificate. Plus, I think the family member who I don't speak to will have applied already. How do I proceed?
Hi, You can obtain a death certificate. Anyone can. What makes you think you can't? Despite what you say I would still apply as NOK - if MOD reply saying no ( which I doubt as it's a revenue earner for them) you'll likely get your £30 back. Steve Y PS I've told a similar white lie as being NOK myself - albeit slightly different in that no previous application had been made by my older cousins.
You can get a copy death certificate from the GRO - General Records office for about a tenner. General Register Office (GRO) - Official information on births, marriages and deaths Just send it off with your 30 quid and apply as next of kin. You will receive the records within a few weeks Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK Lesley
There are 2 forms, depending who is making the enquiry one for serviceman or official next of kin The other is for 3rd party enquiries which is for other family members and non relations (medal collectors or historians etc) It will cost £30 unless you are widow or parent (or surviving service personnel) Regards James
Thank-You chaps. I just *assumed* that because the records have almost certainly been previously applied for & the fact that there are 3 of my Grandad's siblings still alive, that I wouldn't be granted them. I also didn't know that just anyone could apply for a death certificate!
