Service Records application - MOD response timescale

Discussion in 'Service Records' started by DanMorris1989, May 25, 2015.

  1. Hi

Does anyone know how long Army service records are currently taking to be released by the MOD?

I sent off for them a couple of weeks ago. The website says it could take several months if they are not required urgently....but I'm impatient!

Any ideas of current timeframes please?

    Thanks

    Louise

    Hi Louise,

It's a bit of a 'luck of the draw' job...... I've sent off for 4 or 5 this past year and for every one I received a courtesy "we're really busy and it may take some time to get the records to you" letter from the MOD.

That said, I had my granddads back within 3 weeks, but my great uncles took 4 months...... who are you looking for?

  4. Thanks all.

I've applied for my grandfather's WW2 records (only one year's worth - he was a late conscription).

I was able to include all details including regiment, date of death, service number etc. (these are all easily accessible), except for his death certificate which I don't have. My partner wrote the cheque so I'll check with him whether it's been cashed yet. Sounds like this may be a good yardstick as to how quickly they might be processed (Christmas/New Year closure allowing).

Will I receive original docs when they arrive?

    Thanks

    Lou

    Hi Lou

If you need details on your relatives death cert info send me a PM with his details and I will see what I can do. Sometimes they might ask you for a copy of the death cert - wait and see.

  6. Thanks TD - I'll let you know! I was rather hoping they wouldn't need this as he was killed in action (and therefore potentially they'd have necessary official records relating to it)?

    Hi Lou

I don't think you will be needing my services in that case :)

Finger crossed they come through quickly

No you won't get the original docs but very good scans/photos of them.
    example here.

you should have printed off page from CWGC to prove his death.

  9. Hi all

Just to update you that my package arrived today! Not yet had a chance to look properly. On first observation it seems quite thin and not very easy to read (but then he only served for 18 months since conscription).

I'll come back to you all with any queries!

    Thanks

    Lou

I received my grandfathers records earlier this week and I sent the forms off less than two weeks ago!! However, very strange, there is no sign on my bank account to show the cheque for the records have been cashed. Anyone experienced this? I can't understand why the MOD would send out the records without getting the payment first.

Does anyone happen to know if there is a contact telephone number for army service records? I am trying to put together a summary of my Dad's life for his funeral on 30th of this month and wondered if there is any chance of them being able to give me a return within those timescales, based on current waiting times.

Has anyone got a number and/or a view of my likely chances?

    Regards

    Pete

The last telephone number for MOD in Glasgow I have is 0141 224 2146

I think expecting records within 2 weeks is pushing it a bit. They take on average 3-4 weeks, (which is a great improvement from a while ago) but it's worth asking if they could speed it up. Good luck:)

edit: just had a look at their website tel no is 0141 248 7890

    Thanks Lesley

I know I am probably pushing my luck, but thought I would give it a go just in case. It will help us fill in a bit of a gap in his life which we are very unsure of

Don' t be put off by the long wait....

I have never regretted applying for my own and have placed them in my Photo Gallery so that others can see the wealth of material available.

Just thought I would let you know that a wonderful lady called Marina Waugh at the Records Office has sorted out all the paperwork and put a copy of my dad's service record in the post today so that I have the details for his funeral

2 day turnaround .... you can't ask for better than that.

    Regards

    Pete

Well done Pete and to Marina Waugh at the MOD.
It seems they have got their act together at last-the records used to take forever and when they did come, some members who applied for them only got half of them too.

So now it is my turn to ask the question. What sort of wait has everyone been experiencing lately for service records from Glasgow. I sent off for my great uncles in early January, but no sign at present. I've got a few more to send off for, but was waiting for Uncle Sid's before going again. :(

I also applied in January for a set. I received email confirmation on the 18th January but still haven't received anything.
