Could anybody tell me how i would go about finding out my grandfathers service number??? I inquired on getting his service records but they asked for his service number, i said i dont know i was hoping you could tell me that.....she said that i need to give them his service number then they can find his records. Help please. Thanks, FAUVELbrownell
I thought if you dont need to know his number if you tell them his date of birth. I'm sure people have obtained records without the number.
Owen is right, folks have applied with DOB (It wouldn't hurt to supply other details that might help to cross reference: like place of residence, NOK at the time.) You shouldn't have a problem unless he had a very common name. Without knowing background here are some tips about where you might be able to find it. - if he was awarded a gallantry medal or honour for service, (MM, DCM, MC, DSO, OBE, BEM etc) this would be the easiest to check via London Gazette or TNA awards search engine. - if he married, or had children during service, check the certificates; sometimes a number is noted along with the man's details. - look in old papers: AB64, backs of photos, squad photo?, dedications/inscriptions in Regimental Histories, letters home, other official correspondence ie with campaign medals, personal diary, etc etc
Yes i thought this also, I was sure before i contacted them that i didnt need the number, and Leslie Fauvel isnt exactly John Smith either. I must have given her his date of birth cuz i remember phoning my mother to check i had it right. Do you reckon i should try again as maybe the woman made a mistake? Although is their any way i can find out his number myself because i also need it or something else?
