Hello I am looking for information about Sergeant Fear No. 5678305 it' s a para who has drop at Grangues (Normandy), in a field north of the castle is it possible to find information of this sergent ?? thank's Ben
FEAR is a very common surname in Somerset so this ties up. I`ve been researching a FEAR family from Weston-super-Mare who my Grandfather had connections with during the war. Unfortunately I don`t know of any family member who had this service number but Somerset seems to be the right area. John
In Paradata there is a Corporal Frederick Rowland Fear who was in the SLI before transferring to the Para's but he was not in Normandy, but was in Operation Dragoon in the south of France. Do you have more info on him e.g. parents names etc TD Edited to add: Date of birth might be useful as well.
Sgt Fearwas 7th Battalion Parachute Regiment and was wounded in August 1944. Hope this helps. Cheers Arnhem
Ben, There's a Pte. Fear on the 7 Para nominal roll, but with a different service number. There is no Fear listed in the stick of men that accompanied Lt. Bowler, dropped near Grangues if that is the one you mean. Regards ...
Hi Ben, I haven't found anything in my data. I checked the 7th Para sticks in the grangues area; there is one, CN156 in which there were: Lieut BOWLER Pte EDWARDS L/Cpl BINNS Pte TEBBET Pte JAMIESON Pte MOLD Pte SLATER L/Cpl BAGE Pte TROUTT Pte TRAIL Pte ROGERS S/Sgt MARSDEN Pte JAY L/Cpl WILLIAMS Pte SCHWARTZ CQMS MIDLANE Sgt WARWICK it is certain as there is an account from Wally TROUTT in which he mentions he dropped into Grangues. but no Sgt FEAR in that stick. Regards, Ludo
thank's for your answers the Over-smock of Sgt fear was found in Jun 44 in a fiel south-west of Grangues now in museum of Benouville
I have Fear in Lt. Archdale's stick in Chalk 152 flown by 190 Squadron captained by a Pascoe. It seem the stick may have been dropped on coordinates 1173 on a 1:25,000 scale map. Also dropped 8 green containers with 4x mortars, Machine gun with 500 rounds, 2000 rounds of .303, 2 Radio sets with a range finder plus 750 rounds and 2,000 rounds of 303. Stick: Lt. Archdale, Cpl. Sullivan (P/W), Pte. Prime, Pte. Lake, Pte. McDonald, Pte. Tindall, Pte. Marchant, Pte. Brown, Pte. Reynolds, Sgt. Delderfield (P/W), Pte. Belsey, Pte. Turner (P/W), Cpl. Docherty (P/W), Pte. Truman, Pte. Nash (P/W), Pte. Bull, Pte. Brown, Pte. Fear, Pte. Dyer, Pte. Perry, Sgt. French brithm
Ben, It's strange the over-smock of Sgt. Fear should be found south-west of Grangues? I asked Michael P-C and he told a similar story. "The outer jump jacket presented to the Pegasus museum recently has Sgts Fear's name written inside and was given to the Mairie at Grangues years ago. It is the only known example of the early DZ markings for 7 Para a white diamond on a green circle worn by all officers and NCOs on D-Day." How it ended up in that field I don't know? We are missing a piece of the story. Regards ...
Hi all, one possibilty could be a mix up of Oversmock prior to the jump. In that case someone else was wearing Sgt Fear smock on the Big jump. Regards, Ludo
Morning, Please I think I`m missing something ,if `Fear` is a Pte in `brithm` list then how is his smock named to a `Sgt` ???. Sorry if I`ve missed the obvious Kyle
Hi Kyle, As it turns out there were two Fears with the 7th Parachute Battalion. The first, Pte. Percy Frederick Fear 7951195, was with the mortar platoon if he jumped with Lt . Archdale (see my attachment above and Brithm's list). The man in question, however, is Sgt . J. Fear 5678305 (as pointed out by Arnhem and horsapassenger) who is listed as a section Sergeant under Lt. Walter Parrish, CO of 7 Platoon "C" Coy. "C" Coy were in the lead Stirlings to take off from Fairford carrying 7 Para men. We know that Sgt . J. Fear is not listed as being with any of the aircrraft or horsas that came down at Grangues, nor is he in the stick of men who jumped from CN 156 under Lt. Bowler and landed in the area (see Ludo's list above). So how would his outer jump jacket end up being found in the Grangues area which is some 16 kilometres by road from Ranville and DZN? Hope that helps and my summary is for the most part correct ...
Could it be that it was left during the Seine advance at De Grangues? Sorry about the mix up everyone! brithm
Good evening Cee I’ve just came across this thread while read through the airborne section,Sgt Fear was injured on the night my uncle was killed he was C company do you know if they where in the same stick . Thank you in advance to all who have posted their knowledge here very best Brian
Hi Brian, John Edwin Fear is listed as a Section Commander with 7 Platoon in the book "The Tale of Two Bridges". Michael P-C in his nominal roll has him as a Sergeant with 7 Platoon for Normandy and the Ardennes. He was wounded August 11th, 1944. I'm not sure of the circumstances there. Presumably later in day from the patrol incident which took your uncle Peter Ely's life? The nominal role doesn't give a platoon number for Pte. Peter O.W. Ely only that he was with 'C' Company. The units of some men in your uncle's patrol who were killed or wounded: KIA - Pte. Alfred Leslie Burden - 'C' Coy only given KIA - Pte. John David Webster - 8 Platoon, 'C' Coy KIA - Lt. John Howard - Platoon and Company not listed WIA - Pte. Stanley C. Wood - 9 Platoon, 'C' Coy 'C' Coy jumped from Stirlings CN 127-133 on D-Day. Best guess is the platoons were allotted aircraft in a numerical order. Without further information it is hard to know which aircraft Pte Ely flew on. Regards ...
