I have a 10 Yen note that appears to have been signed by Comdr GL Maher and Major Greg Boyington while on board the USS San Juan while it was in Toyko Bay on Sept 2, 1945.

I have been researching the notes history and was wondering if anyone knows what the abbreviation of “S.O.P” means in the second line of GL Maher’s entry? Or is it “Sr. O.P.” as he was the senior POW of camp Omori?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have deciphered three of the four signatories, still working on number four.

As I’m new to this forum, I’m doing something wrong, it keeps clipping my text, hope this one works.

    Rich,

I am inclined to agree "S.O.P." means Senior Prisoner @ Omori. I note a USN official photo caption:
    From: https://www.history.navy.mil/conten...-march-1-battle-sunda-strait/80-g-490451.html and https://www.history.navy.mil/resear...-donated-collections/pd-m/maher-arthur-l.html

Might the cited testimony given after liberation refer to his actual title?

He is A.L. Maher not G.L. Maher as you posted.

You are correct, AL Maher, sometimes my brain and fingers don't talk to each other.
