i find this very hard to believe it but has anybody else heard that some town / city councils have banned the selling of the RBL poppy for fear that it may upset some minoroties?

I so hope this is a pile of bull although there's a part of me that wouldn't be surprised if it is true!

    Hello Paul

I think you will find that a number of charities attract the "banning comment" some time during the their collection lifetime.

I would ignore the "banning comments" usually not true or a very isolated incident.

    regards
    Clive

From the official Facebook page of the Royal British Legion:

    Poppy Legion
There's a rumour going around about poppies not being sold in certain areas this Remembrance period. It is categorically untrue. Poppies will be sold as normal. Pls share this!

Seems theres a rumour doing the rounds all over the UK

Whenever I see threads like this, I'm always reminded of that apocryphal series of newspaper headlines from Goodbye to All That:

When the fall of Antwerp became known, the church bells were rung [i.e. at Cologne and elsewhere in Germany]. Kolnische Zeitung.

According to the Kolnische Zeitung, the clergy at Antwerp were compelled to ring church bells when the fortress was taken. - Le Matin.

According to what The Times has heard from Cologne, via Paris, the unfortunate Belgian priests who refused to ring the church bells when Antwerp was taken, have been sentenced to hard labour. - Corriere della Sera.

According to information which has reached the Corriere della Sera from Cologne, via London, it is confirmed that the barbaric conquerors of Antwerp punished the unfortunate Belgian priests for their heroic refusal to ring the church bells by hanging them as living clappers to the bells with their heads down. - Le Matin

    Best, Alan

Only mid-September, and we're already onto our second potential 'Poppy Scandal'.
Though this one's apparently 100% speculative, and a fairly deep & wide Google reveals nothing. As one kind of imagined it would.
(Does our WW2Talk 'No what If's' rule apply here? ;) )

My eldest once ate his, after pulling it from his hat, aged about one.
    During the main remembrance service...
An old bloke with several medals patted him on the head & asked him if it tasted good.
    Nice moment.

To carry out a collection you need to get a street collection licence for that period, you also need to contact the stores, shopping malls and any other private property you wish to collect on and seek their permission. These people will normally agree but will expect you to produce your collection certificate and also an insurance document for indemnity against claims or accidents caused by the collectors. All the major stores and shops I have found are only to happy to help providing that you ask them. One should remember that you should not approach these people as you have a God given right to invade their stores and do what ever you like.
I have organised many collections for many military groups and approaching the stores in the correct manner I have not had the slightest problem, in fact they have done every thing they can to help.

    So, in short, absolute bollocks.
Someone originating a bit of stirring by spreading a pointless 'multicultural' message?

Whatever - I say again - It's bollocks, Internet trash.

As this rumour seems to be sticking a little on the Interweb ( EDL sorta flavoured Twitter/Facebook users appear to be rather keen on it), and we're coming up quite high on Google, I've added to the title of the thread with: (This Is Nonsense), so it shows on Google's results.

Few more tweets from the Poppy feed, just to underline:

Very sad to read that so many people are prepared to be outraged at baseless rumours.

In fact I'm so outraged at the outrage I'm foaming at the mouth and shouting at the sky , turning purple and about to run around the garden naked waving a rolling pin cursing the outragers.

    Sound stupid?
Well so does getting wound up by this stupid internet rumour.
