Hello. I am searching for more information about my great great uncle James Edward Hannant. He was a corporal in the Sherwood foresters (notts&derby) Regiment 11th battalion. His service number was 70120. He died of his wounds at home 21 nov 1916. I'd be interested to know what his injuries were and what it was that actually killed him. I would also like to know where he served, and what battles or fighting he may have been involved in, any medals, and any other information. Thank you, Sharon
Hi Sharon You can download the battalions war diary for £3.30 in the link below. I'm pretty sure it won't mention him by name but it should give you a good idea on what the battalion was doing before he died. If he died in the UK I'd look for a death certificate, that should tell you what he died of. The regimental museum may be a good bet to try and ID when he was wounded. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353268
Moved thread to the Prewar section of forum as that's where we put the WW1 stuff. Good luck with your research. Prewar as in Pre-WW2
Hi This will be very difficult as his service records do not appear to have survived. Firstly, his regimental number was 70520 and his medal cards are in the name of HAMMANT. These show he was entitled to the British War and Victory Medals. He was born in Tantobie, Durham to Robert and Sarah Jane (nee Hart) Hannant and resided in Newburn, Northumberland with his wife Eleanor (nee Miller) and 3 children. He enlisted at Hexham, Northumberland and was drafted to France AFTER 1 January 1916. Died in Glasgow, most probably in one of the Military Hospitals ie Glasgow Hillhead House Auxiliary Hospital Glasgow Oakbank War Hospital Glasgow Royal Infirmary Glasgow Western Infirmary Glasgow Yorkhill War Hospital Glasgow Bellahouston Scottish National Red Cross Hospital Glasgow Cathcart Aitkenhead Auxiliary Hospital Glasgow Govan Merryflats War Hospital Glasgow Maryhill Military Hospital Glasgow Maryhill Garscube Auxiliary Hospital Glasgow Pollokshaws Pollock House Auxiliary Hospital Glasgow Pollokshaws Matheran Auxiliary Hospital Glasgow Spingburn Woodside Red Cross Hospital Glasgow Stobhill 3rd Scottish General Hospital TF Glasgow Stobhill 4th Scottish General Hospital TF As Drew says, the War Diary is available but undoubtedly will not mention him. Ive had a quick look and they do not appear to list casualties other than officers. Interesting site here which has the 11th battalion history for you to read http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~davidlitchfield/Sherwood%20Foresters/ Hope this helps, Regards, Graeme
Might be worth checking the 'Soldiers Effects Register', which is available on Ancestry. Home deaths may give a cause of death or location of death - just researched a local man, the entire page in the book gave such information. The SER is a record of war gratuity payments, his NOk should have received something.
Hi I am wondering if his death record is on Scotlands People. - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ There is only one listed for a James Hannant, died 1916 in Glasgow City . That will give you cause of death and more details. You have to pay to view. regards Robert
Thanks guys you are all amazing. The information you have given me is fantastic. Would anyone know where I might find some photographs of him? I no longer have contact with my late fathers' family, so I am at a stalemate - and I am intrigued to see what he looked like. Thanks, again, Sharon
Hi I see where you got 70120 from, the CWGC BUT they are incorrect. If you look at their downloadable papers, these have his correct regimental number. Local newspapers would be your best bet for a pic, Also see this site http://www.circlecity.co.uk/wartime/board/index.php?page=6 Graeme
Agreed, the local newspaper for Newcastle would probably have printed a photograph and a death notice as his was a 1916 death. Newcastle City Library has a Local Studies department which should be able to help you. http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/leisure-libraries-and-tourism/libraries/local-studies-and-family-history
James Edward Hannant in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 This shows his death in Glasgow 21 11 1916 WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 results for James Edward Hammant James Edward Hammant in the UK, WWI Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920 TD edited to add: Have tried to find some photos on Ancestry family trees - but there are none. However in one of the 'stories' attached to this man a tree creator has added his 'history' and it appears to have been gleaned from Forces War Records (I know there name is non gratis on here) but the point is the service number in that info is: Service Number: 70120 - so they have directly copied the error by CWGC
