With apologies in advance for being an abject scrounger, does anybody here have personal or institutional access to the following site? http://www.secretintelligencefiles.com/ There seems to be no way that as a non-affiliated private reader I can see I can sign up or access the site. unless I am part of an organisation. The site seem to be linked to Taylor & Francis, but although I've ordered a book from them in the past, I don't think I can 'join' unless I'm an academic (correct me if I'm wrong). There's a free trial option, but again it isn't available for individuals, only institutions. I ask as I would like to download some JIC papers from here: CAB158: Ministry of Defence and Cabinet Office: Central Intelligence Machinery: Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee later Committee: Memoranda (JIC Series) - Ministry of Defence and Cabinet Office: Central Intelligence Machinery: Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee: Memoranda (JIC Series). Joint Intelligence Committee: Memoranda 42-70 - Secret Intelligence Files Documents 44 to 44/16 -- all on Chinese threat to Hong Kong in 1949. The same material is available at Kew (below), of course, but that requires Andy or Lee to make a trip there to copy the bundle--only some of which I require--and then the disc gets mailed to my family who upload it for me to subsequently download it in Korea. A lot of hassle when the same files seem to be available at that tantalising site for a few clicks! Joint Intelligence Committee: memoranda 42-70 | The National Archives Help or suggestions gratefully received. Edit: Everything I've tried generates the following: Access Denied. Thank you for your interest in this content in Secret Files from World Wars to Cold War. Please note that Secret Files from World Wars to Cold War is not a free resource, and access is available for purchase by librarians only.

Just thought I'd suggest it before your final surrender. The telephone might allow the opportunity to point out that is a legitimate research forum......then again you might get the barrage of irrelevant menu options that I seem to encounter more and more these days.
I might have a shot: I've found that a member of another forum I frequent is a (British) librarian--they're going to see whether they meet the criteria.
I just get a 404 error trying to access the site. Was going to see if I could access it through Shibboleth.
