The "A" in this William A Day is his mothers maiden name: Anderton

Full name William Anderton Day, to keep his mothers family name they added it as his middle name.

    ADDED
He died the next year (Mar 1915).

    Good find

as we know he does not show on CWGC so could be an IFC case

Also I have come across headstones that state person was killed in air raid and sent off for DC only to find died of natural causes

so a DC would nail it

also had a quick look on Geoffs search engine

I think there's a good possibility William Day was originally injured/wounded during the Manchester Christmas Blitz of 1940, and maybe died of his wounds months later, with this being the reason he got missed from the CWGC as Civilian War Dead.

This just might be pure coincidence but if you follow this Manchester Evening News Link for Manchester Interactive bomb map of the 1940 blitz
then click on the map further down, locate the area between Ellesmere Park and Salford (to the west of Manchester City Centre), there are a number of casulties (orange dots) in an area to the west of Lancaster Road.

All of these casualties happened on the night of the 22/12/1940 or they died at Hope Hospital the following day 23/12/1940.

One of the casualties was Harold Perret (CWGC details) is listed at 14 Orient Road, Pendleton. This is right next door to the address (of 16 Orient Road) listed as William Day's abode in the cemetery records in post #13.

Harold died at Hope hospital from his injuries. No mention of W.A.T. Day or number 16 Orient street? I'll keep digging.

I now realise tha I hadn’t looked the the 1946 edition of The Prescotian, reading only the war years editions. Basic research error !!!

Agree it's an excellent site. George Cogswell who runs the site also has a sister site called Trafford War Dead
Noticed that quite a few of the Civilian deaths listed on his sites refer to certain 'Civilian War Death' (CWD) reports or case no's.
Most of these seem to cover the Trafford district, but wondered if the Salford district had similiar reports and if they are still available to view.
Maybe they might include names of the injured if they are detailed enough.

Pretty sure the '91 Eccles Old Road' address on the death certificate was the postal address for Hope Hospital

We see so many names on war memorials that do not show up on CWGC ,sometimes the casualty was missed for whatever reason and sometimes the person is included because they died during the war of unrelated war injuries

He appears to have died of kidney failure. A pre-existing condition may be why he hadn't been called up. Odd that the school were misinformed though.
