Nice find Paul! whats the take on the Bruneval pics being as you mentioned before there was no Vooghts on the list of guys involved, looked up on that myself and could find no link, plus its not mentioned in all the place names in his book, also Vooghts is hardly a common name so findin any info thats out there;)

Vooghts DEFINITELY wasn't at Bruneval but that's about all we can say for sure..........and of course he was a POW at some point.
Unless Dave can ID him in any of the pictures I guess we've come to the end of the road until stone can find out more.

    All the best........:)

Got my hopes a little high yesterday. Ill keep searching but his name does seem to crop up anywhere. John was his middle name and he was captured at Arnhem. Id try to search pow camp records but have no idea where he would have been taken at this moment in time. Going to look into that now. Again, Thanks for all your help and time.

Just had a look on ancestry.co.uk, Theres a few L J Vooghts on there, hes the one who married Goble. Im not a member there so cant see any info thay have on him... if different from Pauls arttached thumbnail.

    Hello Stone,

The info I pulled from Ancestry comes from their POW records. I didn't search the normal census records etc. I'll look later and if there's anything else I'll post it..........

    All the best.:)

OK, picture No.3 shows Leslie John Vooght's entry on the Births/Deaths register. It shows he was born on 11th August 1919 in the Hastings and Rother District and that he died in 1989.
Picture Nos. 1 & 2 are the entries on the Marriages register showing that Leslie John Vooght married Janet V Goble in the second quarter of 1980.
Picture No.4 is the only entry I could find in the Births/Deaths register for Janet V Goble. This shows her date of birth as being the second quarter of 1950???
Now my maths isn't great but if these are the right people then Leslie married Janet when he was 61 and she was 30!.
Janet doesn't appear on the Deaths register so I am assuming that she is still alive although the records only go up to 2005 so she may have passed away in the last 5 years although this is quite unlikely as she would only be 60 years old today!

Obviously this is all guesswork and I can't say with 100% certainty that we have the right people but Vooght is a very uncommon surname so I would say this is probably correct.

    Over to you stone! :)..

    All the best.........

PS The pics run from left to right 3,1,2,4

What is your relationship to Mr Vooght?

Firstly, thanks Paul for your detective work. I sincerely hope you dont think Ive wasted any of your time here, Leslie J Vooght was my father, I didnt think providing my mothers details would be of help researching his military background. She is, as you suspected, very much a live and kicking. The date of his death is accurate. I have no idea why the details state they married in the 1980s as they married some time before I was born, (in 81). There was an age gap of around 20 years I believe. My mother had been receiving letters regarding tax based on his work up to a few years ago so the records in some places are clearly not up to date or at all accurate. If I didnt know better Id think hed been "hiding" off record on purpose!

edit: can I ask Paul, how do you know he definitely wasnt at Brueval?

I suspect Paul summised that your Dad was not on the Bruneval raid from the book Without Tradition 2 Para 1941-1945, it lists all those who took parat your Dads name does not appear.......... nor does anything in the diary tie it to the raid. Can I ask how you came by the Bruneval pics as they seem out of place as doeS the Luftwafffe picture:huh:

As far as I know wtid45 the pics had always been in his possesion. It wasnt really until I was a little older when I saw them along with his medals, all kept together in a box. Ill ask if theres anything more specific to it.

I have also been through The Bruneval Raid by George Millar and have also found no mention of him in there. The raid and lads that were there has been very well documented Stone and a name like Vooght would of out stuck because its not a very common name.

Its a shame he didn't write down in his diary the names of some his old comrades.

    Hello Stone,

Yeah as the other fellas have said the Bruneval Raid has been very well documented and researched and several excellent books have been written about it (one of which was by a member of this forum ;)). Sadly your Dad doesn't appear anywhere in the records and, as Dave says, with a name like Vooght he would stick out a mile!

I'm not sure why the records on Ancestry aren't accurate, I guess it's a 'clerical error' type of thing.

In one of the pictures of your Dad, the larger one of the two, he has the 'Para wings' on his sleeve and also what looks like the Royal Artillery or Royal Engineers emblem. Can you throw any light on that mate??

All the best and I hope your digging pays off! :)

The marriage record for Leslie J Vooghts to Janet V Goble was for a marriage in 1980, by which time he would have been in his 60's. The only birth record I can see for a Janet V Goble is the follows, which would have put her age at 30.

    Name: Janet V Goble
Birth: Apr May Jun 1950 - Hastings, Sussex

Do you know anything else about him, where in the UK he came from Etc? If you are sure that this is your man, then let me know, as the 2010 Electoral register still has a Janet V Vooght as living in St Leonards-On-Sea,

There where 2 children from this marriage, Peter C, born 1981 and Lucy J born 1986.

    It is fesiable I suppose

This is just a thought, but the 2nd, 4th & 5th Bns of the Royal Sussex Regiment were formed into 10th Bn Para Regt in 1943.

If you look at the movements in his diary, they are in line with the above.

I will re-read the thread, and if I've got it wrong will shut up.....
