Hi all, I am very new to this site and don't know how it works yet but am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to get information on my grandad, Harold Lloyd. He was born in 1912 so would have been 27 when the war started. He was in the REME (I am not sure what that stands for) I know it is an engineering regiment nad they were responsible for building bridges. He was a dispatch rider (he said he wasn't very good and always fell off!) and he was also involved in catering for the soldiers. He told the family his regiment was one of the first into Bergen-Belsen. That is all I know, but would love to know more about what he would have been involved in during the war. He only rarely spoke of it to anyone.
I would be so grateful to anyone who can give me more information. I will try and upload a photograph next.
    Thanks

update to this post as of 26/9/11 have just received records back, family tol me he was in the REME, records say he was posted to 90 HAA RA are these completely different things? I imagine so but am now confused! Can anyone help me? The records did confirm he also was a dispatch rider.

Welcome to the forum. There's a lot of people on here with a huge amount of knowledge that should be able to help you with information on your Grandad. Good luck with your search.

    Indego,

REME stands for Royal Elecrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Ask your family members if your Grandfathers service records were ever obtained or other army paperwork kept by him on Demob.

If not apply for the records, which will state what Regiment etc he served in.

The members on the forum can help you if you provide some information.

    Regards
    Tom

    Hi Indigo53 and welcome.

I am sure someone will be along soon to help you.

I must admit I thought this might be a thread about the American comedian so it might be worth pressing the "edit" button on your first post, then pressing "go advanced" (to get the thread title bar to be available) and then adding something like "REME and dispatch rider" to the end of the title so that folk with good knowledge of those things will take a look.

Best wishes, and good luck with your search.

By the way, have you any more information about him? And have you applied for his Service Record? they really are invaluable

There is a thread somewhere that tells you all about service records, but this one will certainly help you to start with

I must admit slaphead that when I saw the thread title I thought of someone hanging off of a clock face.

REME were responsible for the maintenance of equipment. They were formed in 1942 to take over some duties from both the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and the Royal Army Service Corps. Bridges were generally built (and blown up !) by the Royal Engineers.

If your Grandfather joined up early on then he would probably have served in RAOC or RASC first.

Motorcycles were extensively used by pretty well all units of the British Army.

Can anyone tell me what this record means. It is from my grandfathers service record, There are lots of abbreviations and I am struggling to read the handwriting. Family story has it that Harold was with one of the first regiments into Belsen but I cannot find any record of the 90 haa at Belsen. Does this document show he was posted to another regiment who were one of the first. I would be greatlful for any help with this.
    many thanks
