Hi, Hoping someone can help me as I'm new to military research. I'm trying to trace a family member, Robert Alexander Mackay, born 15 July 1906, who lived in Bettyhill, Scotland and served in the Lovat Scouts and Royal Tank Corps. I'm trying to find any other information about his time in these regiments, or what happened to him afterwards. Having served during the inter-war period, I would expect that he rejoined for WW2, but I cannot find a record for him. I've attached his Royal Tank Corps record (1926-1936) for reference. Many Thanks
Andy, I’m not sure if its me, but the resolution on this makes it very hard to read. Can you post one in a better Rez so we can see the info better?
Andy first port of call for WW2 is the service records otherwise guesswork kicks in and you can be lead up the wrong path. Re WW2 you say you cant find a record for him.You will not find WW2 records on the internet even if the pay for sites promise it so please dont be conned You can send an email (this is the records office) with your query and they might be able to assist before you begin the process apc-sp-parldiscl-dis4-mailboxATmod.uk AT=@ Below is the info if you do go down the record application Get a copy of military service records All you require is his date of birth ,death certificate and £30 There could be a bit of a wait at present regards Clive
Thanks both. I attach a different version of the record, which may be better for viewing. I dont have death certificate so not sure I can go down record application route. Can you help on understanding this record too. As I understand it, this is a record covering his time in the Royal Tank Corps from 1926-1936? It lists the Lovat Souts in the names column, which I assume was his previous regiment (ie. pre 1926)? Also, how do I understand the cause of discharge column which quotes "Para 199/1 TA Regs"? Thanks

Thanks All. I've found his death certificate, in 1939, so he obviously didnt serve in WW2. Can anyone still help me with my questions on his Tank corps record that I attached. In particular, it lists the Lovat Scouts in the names column, is this his previous regiment (ie. pre 1926)? Given he was only 19 in 1926, does this make sense? Also, how do I understand the cause of discharge column which quotes "Para 199/1 TA Regs"?
Hi, Given that the Lovat Scouts were a TA unit he could have joined on man’s terms of service aged 17 years or he could’ve joined as a Boy aged 15 so it is quite possible he had previous TA service before he joined RTR. The answer will be in his full service file available from UK MOD. You’ll need to have sight of Kings Regulations to fully understand his discharge reference. Steve
