Is there away of searching for a list of names by using the cemetery for example if you don't know the names of those killed?

There is a mass grave in Hither Green Cemetery, SE London from a bombing and I'm missing five children and five teachers from the list of those killed at Sandhurst School.

I have also wondered in the past if you could seach purely by cemetery (To see everyone who is buried there) or by regiment (To see all that units casualties)

    Cheers for any help.

Cheers Rob, I've just emailed you mate.

I've sent a email to the school and library :)

I still wonder if its possible to search for war dead by cemetery or unit though

Can you not find them on Geoff's engine by searching by date & 'Civilian' Andy? Or are there too many on that day?

Or just use 'hither green' - Geoff's Search Engine result

    Are they on there?

Cheers Adam I'll have a toy around. Ive never used it and did have a quick look but didn't think it had a civilian option.

    I'm shocked Andy! :D
Usually well worth checking Geoff's twittering device first, as it's so much more flexible.

The civilan casualties in question are listed on CWGC under Lewisham Metropolitan Borough and not where they are buried. There are over a 1000 and I looked through from A-Z for the date in question.

I then found the names for Sandhurst on the Lewisham War Memorials site for Sandhurst Road School and surprise surprise, not all are shown on CWGC.

That's why I will contact Hither Green where 30 are buried for sure. Some may have chosen to be buried in individual or family plots.

My in laws relatives on the memorial opposite the Sanhurst plot were killed in Sydenham and they are buried in Hither Green. Not even that close!!

    Cheers - Rob

PS - Have not tried a combo on Geoff's search engine yet.

That's the 30 buried in the big plot and underneath should be another list of another 14. It says died elsewhere, but when I checked on CWGC, some died on the same date. Maybe they died not at the school, but in hospital of wounds. A bit pedantic maybe but possible.

PS I type the names for you shortly.

    Cheers Rob,

    What was the date?

I'll do some more digging and see if I get a reply from the School and Local Library. Knowing Lewisham council and the ability of their staff when I lived there plus trying to contact them ref the Lewisham Hospital Memorial I'm a little sceptic with what they put on the internet regarding accuracy.

Some of the other list may have died as a result of wounds but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the others listed died from other raids but happened to attend the school.

    We'll get there mate ;)

The two lists add up to the 44 casualties (38 Kids and 6 Teachers). It just a case of tracking down the following who are not on CWGC (mispelt maybe)

    Cary, VM - Teacher
    May, Sylvia.

The date, it's your thread Andy. Cmon now, get with the progarm :D

Edit:- Found 3 of the missing, which were spelt wrong

(Knovelden) Knowelden, GM - Aged 51, Senior Mistress
    (Deaven) Deavin, Olive A M - Age 15
(Head, Ellen) (names missing) Head, Sylvia May Ellen - Age 12

Maybe the others did not live in the Borough!

I said maybe. The names of the other 12 not in the mass grave now all check out as having died (according to CWGC) on 20/1/43. Just 2 missing.

I thought this might interest you. An article from the Bromley Times dated 17 June 2009. The BBC are making a short series of 5 programmes (called "the Week we went to war") narrated by Catherine Jenkins to be shown in September this year and the Sandhurst School bombing is going to be one of them.
