I am trying to piece together some facts about Sapper W. Challinor No 1944146 of 4 Parachute Squadron RE. He served as Harry Smith No 1921708 for some reason? (German? Jewish?) He was captured at Arnhem and in various unofficial documents is listed as dying as a POW in October, but not with CWGC etc. I would like to clear up this mystery and find out where he is buried if that is the case. All help appreciated Smac02 4th Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers
Sapper W Challinor is listed in the March 1945 POW list (Alias Smith POW No 27767) as being in POW camp 344 (Lamsdorf) at that time so it would appear that the reference to his death in October 1944 is incorrect John
Hi i am searching the same thing and it was William carter, Harry's brother who was the prisoner of war, he was a sapper in the royal engineers his p.o.w number is 2089, he was p.o.w at stalag 344 and apparently the story I was told was that he was sentenced to death but he escaped but he didn't get far because of the cold and lack of food, so when he came across a dead body he used there name and went back into the p.o.w camp, if you have anymore information at all please get in touch as I would love to know more x

Who is A. Sturges? This is intresting, did you see the story i was told about w. Carter in reply to Smac02?
I think the error can be put down to sloppy recording of POW's as they were being registered into the system, I have seen this before. It could also be that Sturges was registered in another camp then transferred to 344. The only POW in camp 344 with the number 2089 is: W Challinor Royal Engineers Lambinowice, Poland 1944146 2089 344 9 Not sure where W Carter comes into it TD edited to add There are another 3 POW's who also have the POW number 2089, but in other camps.
