    Hi all,

I am new to this site, so am a complete beginner!

I am trying to find information about my granddad Frank William Judge. I only know that he joined the army in 1938. His number was 1574183 and I have a document that says he was transferred to RAC 20.9.40., with other soldiers called Albert JUDD, James JUDD,Joseph KEEN, Laurie KENT, Alfred KIRBY and Albert KNIGHT.

What is the best way to find out which regiment/division he would have been in.

The family story was that he was a tank sergeant??? not sure how true this was. He was quite a distinctive looking man - 6'4" dark hair, eyebrows and moustache.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Kerry

Kerry, welcome. I assume that you are looking at the Royal Artillery attestation as the names are all on the same page, there are others. As per Sheldrake's post, his service records are a must, and the only place to start your research. As a point of interest he does not appear in the Casualty Lists. Good luck.

RAC = Royal Armoured Corps = Tanks

    Royal Armoured Corps - Wikipedia
The Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) provides the armour capability of the British Army

So very likely the family story is true - but service records provide the official story
