    Great stuff.

I maybe shouldn't be, what with helping look after a site like this , but I'm surprised by the sheer number of people searching. I can't help feeling there's something of a building genealogical wave driving this stuff, certainly in the UK.

That's a thought actually Geoff; I'd guess it's unlikely, but is there any way, other than general Google Analytics, you can extrapolate which countries the actual searchers are coming from?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

    Adam,

I think there is a lot of serious military research going on rather than genealogical stuff. Lots of multiple searches for particular units to get all using A-Z filtering on name, many searches for ship losses and, especially on WW2, a lot of research on Air Force units of all Commonwealth nationalities. Date ranges seems to be popular. As to where they are coming from, seems to be busy evenings UK time and to a lesser extent lunchtime! I have a log of IP address of every search but it does not tell much other than give an ISP (btinternet etc). I suspect most searches from UK, but Canada seems to be getting popular, Antipodean activity is surprisingly low. Searches for Indian units is starting to appear also.

    cheers,

This is good news Geoff - and justly deserved. I personally think your search engines are two of the most important research tools to come online in recent times.

    Hi Geoff,

Most definitely a fantastic resource. Do you feel this might be something to do with what is/has been available on Australian government websites for many years?

Your engine was great for me as I was able to seek out those Australians in the RAF as they were listed as UK on the CWGC. I picked up another 200 Aussies in the RAF and 50+ died while serving in the RFC/RNAS/RAF during ww1.

Just a few sites that I have used for cross referencing here:

    The Nominal roll WW2:
    WW2 Nominal Roll

    The Embarkation roll WW1:

    Australian War Memorial

The Roll of honour by all conflicts from the Sudan in 1885 to Iraq in 2003:

    Roll of Honour
    Roll of Honour

The commemorative roll which lists those who served, fought died for other countries services:

    Commemorative Roll

There are quite a few others with this website below supplying a similar research facility to yours. Once you know who you are looking for it also gives you the facility to check all others in the particular battalion etc.

One on VC winner Albert Jacka:

Look at Durrington cemetery in Wiltshire and then click the first name. This is not a complete feature but interesting all the same.

    Hi Geoff,

Yes I think so, they are great websites with good quality material and a good 'official' search engine. War diaries now also!

    Glad to help.

Nice search pages, I'm busy looking for Gallipoli brothers on this one (with a little help from my computers)

( example: Gallipoli brothers - Great War Forum)

Yes it was good fun to get it running. I was quite surprised when I got the first crude version running after only a few days. Much tweaking needed later. Now I'm kicking my heels wondering what I'm going to do next!
