Looking that i may have a possible WW1 non-commemorated casualty in one of my local cemeteries, but before i start delving further, i just need some clarification regarding a discrepancy regarding WW1 Reg. No's. The details from the grave for the person i am looking at is as follows William Leishman 2736 - Pte - Seaforth Highlanders who died from Gas Effects October 25th 1919, aged 28 years. MIC exists for that Name with correct corresponding Regiment & Reg. No, but when i check the CWGC site it comes back with the following details http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/321512/McDONALD,%20JOHN McDONALD, JOHN Rank: Private Service No: 2736 Date of Death: 14/10/1915 Age: 22 Regiment/Service: Seaforth Highlanders - 8th Bn. Grave Reference: C. 17. Cemetery: DOUAI COMMUNAL CEMETERY Additional Information: Son of Mrs. Annie McDonald, of 28, Parkhouse Lane, Glasgow. Have seen a headstone (via find-a-grave site) for the above person and that also has Reg. No 2736 on it also, but on his MIC his Reg No is down as S/2736. I am not sure what the S/ prefix signifies, but have the CWGC got John McDonald's Reg No and his Grave inscription incorrect? or was it common (i.e. through clerical error etc) for 2 men in the same regiment to have the same number? Cheers
Not that im aware, its possible for men from different regiments to have the same number as it wasnt till after he first world war that the numbers we know now came into existance, first world war numbers were all issued by the regiment not like now where regiments are allocated a block of numbers There is an error someplace as both wouldnt have the same number from the same regiment
