    Nice one Tom,

I like the photo showing PT and the Heath Robinson bridge across two tables!

Health and safety was not an issue in those days.

    Regards
    Tom

The free school milk picture brings back bad memories for me. During the winters of the 1940s the milk was put on and around radiators to thaw out as it was often frozen. Never liked warm or hot milk since, it has to be straight out of the fridge now.

Although my schooldays started a bit later (1959) it all looks pretty familiar to me too. I did my early lessons on a slate!

The Road Safety photo looks like a Monty Python skit.

"Milk is a touchy subject" these days.

    How so?

School milk has memories for me too.

At home Mum always gave me milk from a bottle with a red top. I liked milk from a bottle with a red top. It was good.

When the family visited my grandparents, Gran gave me milk from a bottle with a silver top. This was in the days not long after rationing ended, so you did not waste food. It was also in the days before refrigerators. I'm afraid that Gran's milk was sour. I did not like milk from a bottle with a silver top. It was bad.

My first day at school, September 1952, and I was not yet 5 years old. I was happily playing with a jigsaw of a London bus, when someone came into the classroom with a milk crate and started to hand out bottles of milk to all the kids. The bottles of milk had silver tops. They were bad.

I wasn't having this, I made a beeline for the door and ran all the way home (which was fortunately just across the road).

And that's how I started my academic career; by running away from school on my very first day.:)

We had the school milk in Australia as well. Freezing cold in winter and the opposite in summer.

Getting through the head of cream was a battle in summer.

What about a photo of my first school class in 1956.

I organised a reunion ("50 years") in 2007 for a few classes and had to name and find over 200 children. Ended up with over 120 attending.

Here is a photo with the names deleted. Yes I am in the photo and no is the answer to the next question.

You to. I did not even stop for the milk. The bell sounded, everyone trooped out into the playground and me .....well I just carried on back home.I thought that was it for the day.[IMG]

You picked the answer I already answered in the negative:p

We never had dinners at school, (unless you were boarding) although my late wife used to relate stories of her going to school in Bow and being made to eat lunch.
