    A worthy website:
    Scammell - a celebration

The Video clip alone gives the lie to there being no vehicle capable of towing the 3.7 as an AT gun over rough terrain, & the drawings are excellent.

Some great off-road photos here too:

    Cheers,

Interesting looking beast. When was she in use?

She's very much a British wartime classic Jeff, roots in the 20's and a fairly long postwar service.
When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's you'd still spot 'em as breakdown vehicles for civvy garages, there's a couple of fairgrounds that still run 'em too.

We watched one on a very muddy off road course a couple of Beltrings ago, full tracked modern vehicles (Fv432, Scorpion etc.) were bogging but the Scammell just powered through, cross-axling like crazy.

Well, I guess I'll get to reading about them. They look like a cross between a duece and half and jeep, with better off-road capability than the truck and more weight carrying capacity than the jeep. A good bit taller than the jeep and I am guessing slower, also.

Judging by your comment on recent civilian use, were they were mechanically sound vehicles, yes?

    What were they replaced by?

The wartime Scammell Pioneer, was replaced as a military heavy tractor, recovery & engineer vehicle by the Scammell Explorer (what the chap on the website recently sold) and constructor along with the Leyland FV1100(Martian) & FV1200, Albion CX/FT & AEC Militant (more of a replacement for the Gun Tractor Matador that one).

The next generation of Tank transporter tractors was mostly represented by Thorneycroft's 'Mighty Antar' & Leyland's FV1000.

Too bad those links are now dead. Love Scammells but am confused about the 3.7 towing. I'm sure you've seen this one many times:

Scammell, as with any famous marque in road transport history, has a dedicated following of enthusiasts, many of whom have restored and drive Scammell lorries. The Scammell Register is the organisation for anyone who owns, or has an interest in, this famous marque.
