Cherrio Blokes, General Mayhem here. Stationed stateside in Ohio since 1955. 2nd generation on my Dad's side. Grandfather was a Brit. (Bloody Celt actually as were me mum's folks). Been reading about WW2 since I was but a wee bairn. Now after 60 years since it's end, the histories are getting much better and the critical analysis more penetrating. Read a lot of Hitler biographies, currently going through a Stalinist period. History is a passion and a pastime as well as the means of understanding the human character. I'm a undiscovered artist (not starving, but not dining at the Ritz either.) I'm docked in Fairport Harbor and in sight of the lighthouse. Great to find a community of other WW2 addicts as well as humbling since I'm sure you all know a lot more than this poor shifter. Well heads down and helmets on mates. sincerely Gen. Mayhem
Aye, Mayhem, good post. History bug bit you, too, eh ? Join the madness. Cheers, Johnnie, 1 Mx MG Bn, 15 Scottish Div.
Thanks mate. Where I'm bunkered down there aren't many fellow enthusiasts so I have reach conclusions about what I've read without the input of people who are as well read or preferably more knowledgeable on these topics. The problem with history and WW2 history is that it is so badly taught. Isn't history a matter of controversy? Didn't the Greeks recognize that? oops treaded into uncovered territory, I haven't read much greek history, more roman. Got all my greek history from the movies Troy, Alexander and the 300. Well I'm in it now as Gregory Peck said in the Guns of Navarone and right up to my neck so I've laid ou my kit and bandages and am prepared to take me knocks.
Thanks again gents, I look forward to a good wetting. I've read a lot but I'll bet I'm going to happily discover I haven't read half of what I think I have. "I don't mind being told I'm wrong. By my age I've been around long enough to know that I've been wrong 50% of the time and I'm in excellent company with the rest of humanity." Merlin
"I don't mind being told I'm wrong. By my age I've been around long enough to know that I've been wrong 50% of the time and I'm in excellent company with the rest of humanity." Merlin You are human! The only people who do not get on well on this forum are those who think they are always right and those who are never wrong!:p
