Hi folks. Allways been interested in anything WW2,and found this site while looking for info on R.N.A.S. Blackcap(stretton).I like to explore the few remainning ww2 relics that are left.Sadly,i seem to have left it a bit late in most cases.I have been trying for years to find out more about a local place. It was called R.A.F.Altrincham and also No.2 maintainance unit,or ammo store no.2.Apparently, during the first world war,it was the largest ammo dump in the u.k.As a kid in the 70s,i remember it was being used for farm storage. In its hayday it had huge storage sheds, fire station, pillboxes, and was fed with its own railway branchline.Today you wouldnt know it used to be there apart from 2 pillboxes. As e teenager,i used to go digging live ammo from the area.Afew years ago,i went exploring in the trees and found a pile of concrete cylinders. They were shaped like thermos flasks of various sizes with screw on bakolite lids and stencilled numbers.I can also remember them being there as a kid.Can anyone shed any light on any of these puzzles please.?
