S.S. Ulea was lost after being attacked by U374 in the Atlantic, ENE of Azores. Casualties given as 13 crew, 3 gunners and 3 passengers killed. The gunners were all RN. ALEXANDER, William, Act/Able Seaman, P/JX 267595, (President III) ELLISON, Gordon, Act/Able Seaman, D/JX 198367, (President III)] FERNIE, William, Act/Able Seaman, D/JX 239636, (President III) CWGC lists the following MN deaths. Fireman and Trimmer Francis Phillips (31) Master Frederick O. Ambrose (54) Fireman William Dawson (25) Fireman and Trimmer James D. Lynn (24) Chief Engineer Officer Duncan B. Ferguson (58) Chief Officer Alexander Galbraith (29) Able Seaman Axel Wilhelm Nyross (21) Cook Robert S. Strang (61) Second Engineer Officer Hugh H. Falconer (49) Steward Rees A. French (43) Boatswain George D. Rome (38) Donkeyman William H. Johnson (31) Second Officer Elizeus G. Jones (65) Fireman and Trimmer Percival J.V. Vincent (21) Master Arthur G. Berg (55) Some I believe of the above MN deaths, 13 were crew and 2 were passengers. The ship was under the command of Capt Ambrose, so I believe Capt Berg was onboard as a passenger, any idea who the other 2 passengers were? Regards, Steve
Hi Steve, I can confirm that Captain Arthur G. Berg was travelling as a passenger (DBS). I can confirm that Fireman William Dawson was also travelling as a passenger (DBS -ex EMPIRE MOAT) I also have two names A. Lee and a surname Campbell both noted in the Deaths at Sea Index as lost aboard ULEA but the actual DAS Register [which gives more information] page is missing. Both the names I have listed: Lee and Campbell are not on the CWGC. There is also a survivor's report for ULEA but unfortunately one that I don't have. Crew Agreement may or may not help here. Regards Hugh
Hi Hugh, Thanks as always. Regarding the missing A. Lee it seems he could be LEE, Arthur, Able Seaman, P/JX 213219, MPK [PoM] CWGC list him as HMS Ark Royal, but ADM104 has him as HMS President III (S.S. Ulea). So I wonder if he was the missing passenger, having left the aircraft carrier in Gibraltar and was traveling back to the UK? Regards, Steve
Yes, good work Steve - for some reason I couldn't find the full page for ULEA but here it is for you with your confirmation re Arthur Lee - although he is listed with the other DEMS and not a passenger. Nice work again. Regards Hugh
I think we can discount the surname Campbell now as looking at the entry again I think it is scored out in red albeit very lightly. I would suggest the 19 names above are the casualties of the sinking. Regards Hugh
