I have been compiling information on RAF and Commonwealth personnel who are listed on the Runnymede Memorial and whose bodies were later found and given a named grave. Mostly aircrew found post-war across Europe.

I thought it would be of interest, and I know there must be quite alot more I haven't found yet.

All these men are still listed on the Runnymede Memorial as the names will only disappear when in the future the panels are replaced.

Quite a number of Battle of Britain pilots are listed over the years due aviation archaeology.

    Great info Mark.

Makes one query I have clearer.

Also your last entry on the Addendum panel 289 Sgt Smee was an Australian in the RAF.
At the beginning of the war he was serving in the Australian merchant marine but got tired of being shot at and not being able to fire back so, on arrival UK, he jumped ship, changed his name, joined the RAF. At the time of the crash he was engaged to a local girl from Hayes in Middlesex who he was going to take home when the Beaufighter was being introduced to Australia. This also explained the reason why he was buried so far from Tangmere in Sussex.

I notice that a lot of the "Missing" are in fact at Brookwood Military Hospital.
Now, I can understand a certain amount of confusion about various burials scattered throughout the Country, but surely Brookwood must have had some serious glitches in its record keeping if the RAF didn't know what became of them?
    Is there a sensible explanation?

    Hi,

Great input everybody, I hope to keep adding to the list. I do like a good mystery !

Also names are still being added to the Memorial Addenda panel.

F/O J.E Cornelison RCAF 438 Sqn KIA 29/9/44 is now listed on the Addenda. He was recorded as being buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. Also F/O J.W Millar RCAF 44 Sqn KIA 8/2/43 is now listed on Panel 291. He was recorded as being buried at Lemvig Cemetery Denmark. I believe in his case there was a possible mix up with a sailor also called Miller !

    Hi,

Great input everybody, I hope to keep adding to the list. I do like a good mystery !

A small summary of this mystery: Flight Sergeant Gordon Reader was part of the crew for Halifax MZ289. At 17 September 1944 they were ordered to fly a 'classified bomb drop' above the North Sea. The plane got lost without a trace.
Near Milsbeek a plane crashed at the same day, including a Australian airman. As there was only one Australian airman listed for a mission that day (Reader), he was identified as Flight Sergeant Gordon Reader. But the other crewmembers of the MZ289 were not recovered from the crash site and are still missing.
And how can it be that the MZ289, who was on a mission above the North Sea, crashed near Milsbeek? In that case there must have been a link between the classified mission target and Market Garden??

    Hi Marks,

    RAAF definitely founds burials/headstones for.

Do you have a list? Means I need to have more headstones photographed?

    Cheers

Here's another. Molly Grace (née Lecky) was killed when she was in a plane which crashed on an airfield in England. So was the other occupant; it is not known who was flying the plane. As she was buried in the family graveyard in Ballon, Co. Carlow, Ireland, it is not clear why her name is on the Runnymede Memorial.

    Hello Belville
Is it possible that the body was not recovered and that she is remembered on the headstone in Ireland
