Hi, I have some figures which show the regiments of origin of the regular officers who were in command of field-force divisions and above in September 1939. But the figures for the Royal Armoured Corps lump together the cavalry and the Royal Tank Regiment. Does anyone happen to know whether any men of the RTC/RTR had reached general officer rank by September 1939, and if so, who were they? Thanks, - Alan
Alan- Don't think there were many - only ones I can think of were Hobart - Pile - Fuller - Swinton possibly as they were still looked on as Oily Mechanics - by 1940 only Hobart was left as Pile went to Ack-Ack and the other two retired - Gordon Finlayson finally got rid of Hobart in the desert but not before he had set up the 7th Armoured Div - he then came back to set up 79th Armoured Div as lance Corporal of the Home Guard - didn't get any further than Maj.Gen though even as his brother in law was head man of the shooting match in Normandy - told it like it was ! Cheers

Idler the initial question was - " RTR Generals of field force Divisions in 1939 " Roberts for example didn't become brigadier until '42- Firth '42 - Dawney - '44 - Carver - '43 Gatehouse '41 et al cheers
