Diane, as requested, the info from other thread.

Made curious by the inscription on William McGennity's headstone, further investigation led me to a rather poignant story of one family during the war. On checking I found that his 3 year old daughter, buried with him, was commemorated on the CWGC civilian war dead register. Sadly also commemorated are his wife and 16 month old son. An entire family killed during a German air raid.

Many thanks for posting this, I have updated posts nos 5 and 17 accordingly.

Interestingly, I had missed Rifleman McGennity's daughter thanks to my search criteria not allowing for Royal Ulster Rifle in the cwgc additional info

    DBF,

thanks for posting these, it makes for sombre reading! This chap is my Dad's older brother and my uncle...

    689 MALLETT J 7011055 1ST BN 19/04/1941 ROYAL ULSTER RIFLES

called home from India to defend the motherland against the threat of Nazi invasion they were all geared up to fight, when the fight failed to materialise I guess they fought each other. Following an argument with a comrade, somewhere in Essex, Uncle Jack returned to his bunk only to have his mate follow him and stab with a bayonet while he lay in his bunk. According to newspaper reports of the time, before he died Jack took responsibility for starting the argument.

When the 1st Bn were brought back from overseas they disembarke at Liverpool to a corn beef sandwich and a cuppa from a NAAFI wagon and then, in true British Army fashion, straight on a train to a little village called Wheatley in Oxfordshire. Arriving at midnight they didn't even have so much as an oil lamp to light their way (most of their kit was destroyed by an Italian incendiary in the ships hold whilst enroute) with orders to be at Oxford Rail station, (some 7 miles away) by 5:00 am to collect their vehicles. Very few men in the battalion could actually drive having spent many years managing mules in India! But they collected their vehicles and managed to get them back to Wheatley without killing themselves or any civilians along the way. They spent the next six months under canvas in Wheatley before moving into Headington.

None of this I knew when I married a girl from Wheatley and moved there many, many years later. Never having the pleasure of meeting Jack I now live across the road from the field in which my Uncle Jack camped for 6 months during the war. Odd to think that he and I have propped up the same bar in the same little English village almost 60 years apart! It gave my brother Jack goosebumps when I told him the story in the village pub when he came to visit a year or so ago. I rather think the dead want to be remembered and maybe, just maybe, they have ways to make sure that they are remembered!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
What an excellent post. Thank you for relating your uncle's story. What a sad tale indeed.

I can certainly understand your brother's goosebumps, when he heard the coincidence about your uncle. How long did you research the story?

    Regards,
    Diane

    Hi Diane,

I hadn't researched the story long at all. Jack is one of those characters that grabbed my attention when I was just a wee lad growing up in Londonderry. There was an envleope with some stuff in it and a press cutting, from the Belfast newsletter I think, detailing his death. For some reason his story has stayed with me, I can't honestly say why. Years later my wife, on a whim, bought me the official history of the RUR, "The Rifles are There" by Orr and Truesdale. It was whilst reading this that a great deal of the story came to light. Uncle Jack just won't leave me alone... I found this sforum whilst doing a google search on the Lifebouy flamethrower and lo and behold Jack pops up again. Anyway here's a pic of Jack in uniform with a pal..., Jack is on the right.

Don't mention it Dianne, I like talking about Jack. He was a pre-war regular and spent a lot of years overseas 'defending the Empire' and I think he deserves to be remembered from time to time. I'd like to meet the old boy who killed Jack, to say hello, to hug him or something... just to square the circle you know!

Great that you are keeping his memory alive.

What a nice thought, and going by your attitude you have sympathy with your uncle's last wishes. I am sure if he's still with us, that veteran would appreciate those sentiments.
