Was just saying to the other half yesterday what a shame we can't take the boys to the Royal Tournament anymore as I've an incredibly strong childhood memory of two mounted Hussars officers prancing about in the spotlights, and then this crops up: Royal Tournament celebration of armed forces to be revived after 11 year gap - Telegraph No website that I can see yet but this is quite encouraging news. Musical Ride, Fieldgun Race, Massed Bands etc. 4th & 5th of December. ~A
Hey - that looks good! I can see a trip on for that with my daughter and my nephews. Like you fond memories of it in the 70s - remember being able to play with and strip down Sterlings, L4 Brens etc. I bet that won't be possible these days...
Great News....I cried when I watched the last one ever on the TV, I used to love going to the show, I even went once in uniform when I was a cadet. Jim Davidson campaigned like mad to keep it-I bet he is chuffed to bits its coming back. I seem to remember the MoD stated that they would do more shows on a much smaller scale around the country so people could identify their local regiments etc. I can't say it ever took off. Cheers for that Adam.
From the Torygraph article: The return of the event is supported by the MoD but, at least initially, will not be able to use the word Royal in its title, as it does not yet have the necessary patronage. Surely her Maj will be pleased to offer support so they can ditch that 'British Military Tournament' nonsense and the real thing can be back at last. Maybe that's why no website yet; she seems rather busy this weekend after all.
Change of government change of heart! great news I recall 1983 being invited to spend a couple of hours with the gunners as they prepared for the evening show. If we can't get will they televise the proceedings for us mere mortals who may not be able to attened
Blimey. I've just looked at the prices on Ticket Master though. Brace yourself... The British Military Tournament tickets Earls Court London, , Directions, seating chart. Official Ticketmaster site.
That is a bit minty...Can I suggest that if anyone does decide to go, as with all British military shows, go on the last night
Bill, Hello and welcome to the forum. I used to enjoy the show on TV, especially the RN gun team. Once worked with an ex RN who was at Earls Court as part of the gun team and it was interesting to hear him speak of his experiences. Regards Tom

Andy, Funny that you should mention the loss of a finger. On the night one of his friends fumbled the cotter pin for the wheel and ended up putting his finger in to run the gun along without losing the wheel. Needless to say his friend lost his finger. Talk about adrenelin flowing. It makes me cringe just thinking about it. Regards Tom
I watched a documentary years ago on the naval gun race. Fantastic it was two and the two things that always stuck with me was the gun being dropped on a old car to show how heavy it is and one of the instructors, a CPO I think, saying that most of the men will or have lost fingers being in the team.
I just checked out the prices from VP's link, some of them are extortionate Block A, Row A, going for £249.97 per seat! quick, pass the oxygen! ..........Mind you, Block D looks good value, I may give it a try if I'm back in Blighty in time!
I (with a couple of mates) stood in front of a plastic Harrier aircraft in 1991. We told folk that we took the roof of and landed at Earls Court. Roxy
VP - this sounds like the BA's seat sale - trouble is - you have to leave the seat in the aircraft - so it's not much of a deal ! Drew - losing a finger reminds me of the carpenter who cut off all his fingers - and the doc gave him hell for not bringing them with him as it is now 2010 and they can do wonders by stitching them back on etc - the carpenter then asked the Doc how was he supposed to pick them up ? Cheers
Andy A very common injury in the RAC was a missing finger tip. I can recall at least three chaps with this disfigurement that I came across during my time with the 4th Hussars. It was caused, as I'm sure most of you know, by the crew commander's hatch dropping down un-expectedly and trapping one or more of his finger tips. Nasty !!!
It is good news, hope it returns with the old format of all three services not just one. I took part in the 1984 RT, video clip on YOUTUBE still shows me and my dog Max in the beginning of the clip. Fond memories....
