While researching the life and work of Arthur George of Newcastle, a prominent racing driver and aviator around 1910, I stumbled across brief information about his war record. He served in the 2nd Boer war then was a Major in the Motor Volunteer Corps in WW1. Finally, during WW2, he appears at various times to have been a Wing Commander in the ATC, later he joined the Home Guard (both in Newcastle). Then came something strange, a newspaper report that at the age of 69 he had become a volunteer engineer in the Royal Navy small ships pool, again in the Newcastle area.

Can anyone tell me what the small ships pool was and what type of work did it do. It has been suggested to me they were used to ferry men and materials around the British coast but try as I might, I can find no reference to any such unit.

Any information or references however brief will be most gratefully received in my quest to flesh out the story of a remarkable man.
