Hello all Have been asked to help my neice's fella in finding info on his Granfather's service. Attached are pics of the said certificate and I gather that his service number to be PO/X 125910, indicating a Portsmouth location and the prefix X for short term duration. To whome would he need to apply for copies of his Granfather's service records, will it be 'The Royal Marines Historical Records' Portsmouth?. In addition what do make his previous employment as, 'Fellmongers Puller' and what is his rank, noted as in image 3 (Sgt ty or is it tg); and image 4 under service character, noted as Satisfactory, what is his substansive rank indicated in the brackets? I will atke it that released to Class A, relates to being discharged to Class A Reserve? It is interesting to note the removal of the top right hand corner as indicating a bad service, and the slip of paper warning of making 'additional comments / record of service!! Thanks for any help James
If you want his service record then click this link click here This will take you to the forms you need, it should cost about £30.00 as he is not spouse or parent which then it would have been free. Hope this helps Regards Keith
Hello James, Image 4: Character = VG or Very Good. Efficiency in Rank = Sat or Satisfactory. Substantive Rank in brackets = Mne or Marine. Image 3: Rank = Sgt (Ty), probably Sergeant Temporary; as his substantive rank was 'Marine'. Best, Steve.
I have been trying to find out which Officer signs the "V good Character" bit (fourth thumbnail. Seems to have been signed by a Hawley (possibly Cawley?) and then "wap" is added. Who would sign this document ?- typically which Officer? What position and what rank?
Hi James and Peccavi I think it is Joseph H Cawley Way, same CO on my father's Service Sheet while at Portsmouth Division December 1945. He was promoted from Major to Lt Col 12 July 1946 according to London Gazette. Sarah
