Thanks Drew - good stuff. There is another side to this story and not all of it may be in Kew. It doesn't make this quite clear, but the key RMASG task was to keep the fire on the beaches after the field artillery run in shoot ended. On Omaha beach there was a definite pause between the fireplan ending and the assault troops landing. The RMASG were part of the plan to ensure that the was no pause in suppressing fire.
