I'm in the process of writing up the experiences of one of our local veterans and would like to know something of what the 4th Bn (A Coy) the Royal Berkshire Regiment would have been doing (and where).

The salient information that I have is:

    1. February 1940 - to le Havre
    2. In France
    3. 8th May 1940 taken prisoner near Ypres.

If anyone can supply a few details and place names I would be most grateful.

Just incase anyone looks in on this thread:

The Battalion arrived in France on 18th January at Le Havre and the battalion suffered their first casualty due to 'sickness'. 5337079 Corporal C Turner. Buried on 22nd January at 1000 hrs in a 'blinding snowstorm'.

For most of Feb and all of March and April the battalion was in Gruson and the surrounding area and they didn't leave the area until 12th May.

To be fair the Germans didn't invade Belgium and Holland until the 10th May so its very unlikely the 8th May is correct.

The nearest the battalion got to Ypres was on the 26th/27th May at Pepegale. From there the moved to Furnes arriving on the 30th May.

Found this lad in a WW1 CWGC at Polekappel near Langmaark in Belgium. Presumably killed while either trying to get to Dunkirk or holding the line while others could make their way there. RIP young man

Lovely sentiment at the bottom of the headstone.
