    Hi,

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction, looking for Gunner George Pace born 1906, ageordie, but living in Hull. He was a signaller in the Royal Artillery serving with 'Monty' in North Africa, trying to find out more about him, or what medals etc he had. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try the Public Records Office in Kew, thank you for your family's service to Crown and Country, and welcome to the boards!

Actually, the only army service records in the National Archive are those for soldiers whose service ended prior to 1921 and these records are far from complete due to bomb damage in 1940, when approximately 75% were lost.

To gain access to the records of a WWII soldier, you need to contact the address shown in this page:

    http://www.mod.uk/contacts/army_records.htm

The address is different for RN, RM and RAF, but there is a side bar link to the information you need. There are also different cut-off dates for records being deposited at the NA, but none of the records covering WWII are.

They are pretty strict about releasing to the individual or next of kin only and if you are not the legal next of kin, you will certainly need their written permission and documentary proof of their status. Note the search fee.

  4. Try the Army Record Office in Hayes Middx, they will give you everything you need, from the day he enlisted until the day he left.
