Battery Sergeant Major? Your thought appreciated. It's from a very interesting photo I got off eBay this week.
Dare I say he's a Sgt? The badge above is a gun denoting he's in the Artillery I bet he's a forum member or something I'll shut up now
Sgts wore a Regt badge above their chevrons. This practise is still followed today on Mess Kits. The Sgt's in The Royal Corps of Signals still wear a 'Jimmy' on their Mess Kit BSM's as with any SM or WO2 would wear the rank on the sleeve or a leather bracelet.
Drew is right, the rank shown is Sgt. A BSM would have been and still is a WO2. The rank would have been indicated by a crown on the forearm, either on the jacket sleeve or on a leather wrist band.
Sergeants and S/Sergeants in the Gunners wear the 'gun' above their chevrons like engineers of the same ranks wear a grenade.....so RA not RE....
Thanks for all the input. I will post the full photo tomorrow. The background to the group photo of which this Sgt is a member is the interesting bit...
Any chance of seeing the full pic? Here, http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/nw-europe/16014-menin-gate-ypres-1944-a.html
