    Hi
I wonder whether anyone can help me? I am researching a gunner who attended and passed a signallers course held at Portland between the 5th of June and the 2nd of July 1944 while serving with 105 Battery, 522 (Dorset) Coast Artillery Regiment RA.

He finished the course and was classified as a 2nd Year Regimental Signaller.

Can anyone tell me what a 2nd Year Regimental Signaller was and what his role would have been in a RA Regiment?

    Thank you in anticipation

Regimental Signallers were responsible for communications (radio and telephone) to and from RHQ and the Batteries and to and from the Battery HQ to the Troops. Signallers from an attached Royal Signals unit were responsible for communications between RHQ and higher authorities. Your man would therefore have been responsible for communications within the Regiment. Sorry no idea on 2nd Year - are you sure this is what it says?

    Thanks Tim

I have checked the service record and it definitely reads 2nd year Regimental Signaller and I have attached an excerpt from the record to this post. Ive not been able to find anything about what a 2nd Year R. Signaller might have been but the hunt goes on!! Once again thanks for your help.

    Best regards

    Mike

    Hello Mike,

From “Signal Training (All Arms) 1938”,
“Signallers will be classified as “first year” or “second year”.

There are about ten pages describing the employment of signallers in an Artillery regiment, but Tim has summed it up very well.
