Had a look at this for PieterF, as the deaths happened after cessation of hostilities.

War Diary page from 126 LAA Regt, RA. Typically understated, with not a lot of information other than the event happened. Explosion at a Munitions dump, unloading German ammunition. Court of enquiry concludes no one to blame.

    DSCF0712 (Large).JPG

From the War Diary of 2 Canadian Field Regt, RCA.

Full description of the event and the cause. Booby trapped ammunition. 1 RCA man killed and 4 RA men killed, plus some Dutch Collaborators they were presumably using as labour (number killed not specified).

War Diary page from 2 Canadian Field Regt, RCA about the burial ceremony.

    "Rob,

I know he is from the Royal Canadian Artillery, but I did also post his headstone and records, as they all five died at 20 May 1945. I wonder what happened to these men. At 20 May 1945, the war was already over for about two weeks. Zwartewaal was, at the moment of the armistice, far beyond the frontline in German occupied territory. So they can't have died of wounds in a field hospital. Perhaps an accident?"

I've received an enquiry for information from the Director of the Arras Public Library and Archives for any information about the death of the following casualty.

    Name: SIMPSON, FRANCIS GEORGE
    Rank: Lieutenant
    Regiment/Service: Royal Horse Artillery
    Unit Text: 4 Regt.
    Age: 34
    Date of Death: 07/09/1944
    Service No: 300140
    Awards: M M
Additional information: Son of Francis Edward and Hilda Maud Simpson; husband of Beatrice Maude Simpson, of Southall, Middlesex.
    Grave/Memorial Reference: Plot 8. Row A. Grave 26.
    Cemetery: FAUBOURG D'AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS

    Headstone photo courtesy of Laurentbiblio

Did a look up and found that the Regt were advancing quickly through the area around Arras, crossing several rivers, but there was no mention of the above officer in the war diary daily entries. I checked the Officers Field Return and found an entry which stated:-

7/9/44 - Missing from the line of march. Found drowned on 14/9/44.

Copies of the war diary page for 7/9/44 and field return shown below:-
