The barracks is typical of how the Army presents itself to the world - the public rooms are beautiful and awe inspiring but all the bedrooms at the back are falling apart and very poorly maintained. Some verge on the disgraceful. It has been a few years since I stayed there but I was underwhelmed at the time by the bedrooms and ablutions. Utterly archaic. Frank
Steady on old chap! Home of the Regiment etc. It was and still is a grand Regency building - with many Regency features - like the plumbing. I was based therefor a year in the mid 1980s I didn't think the rooms were that bad. I have stayed in worse in supposedly modernised messes in the last few years. I don't think much money was spent on the place while they were trying to sell it off, but even less seems to be spent now. The rooms were a bit soulless as the Deport mess was essentially transit accommodation for visiting Regimental functions. The livers-in seemed happy with their lot. In those days the staff were military or directly employed civilians and long before way as you dine.
Nothing wrong with the location - 1 R ANGLIAN love that bit. Public rooms fab, private rooms shocking. F
