If you apply for his service records and identify what RASC unit he was working with you will probably be able to find out what was happening on the day of his death. That said, his date of death is very late in the big picture which makes me think he may have been killed whilst on the run, having been left behind. The other possibility is he may have been left behind in one of the Csualty Clearing Stations having suffered a wound but I would have thought the wounded in Dunkirk would have been moved by July. I will try and confirm the later-I have a book written by a Officer who was captured in a CCS at Dunkirk. Hopefully he'll give some dates.

There's also an unusual inscription on the bottom of his headstone.

    Cheers
    Andy

Casualties appear to have been evacuated around 10 days after the fall of Dunkirk to various locations so I would suggest the wounded theory is a non-starter.

I've just clicked on the CWGC link and got 404 - file or directory not found.

Does this mean CWGC have changed all the links?

I think it might be the old Certificate page that's been affected Andy

You have to click now on a "View Certificate" button on the left-hand side of the Casualty Details page to get the new format

    Hi Andy + Diane +Aged,

Andy got the war diary for the RASC company my uncle was in, and though entries for May have been destroyed, the diary is fascinating. Andy and others on this site helped me apply for my uncle's War Service Record. It took over 8 months to get, it was well worth waiting for - astounding and touching all at the same time. I also managed to find a man who was in the same company as my uncle (No, 517 Petrol Co), and I'm going to meet him when I'm in England next month. I can't interpret photographs etc. or coach you the way in which people on this forum have done for me because I don't know enough, but I can urge you to make the effort to find out more. There is a surprising amount of information available, but it helps to have a bit of luck and the assistance of people on this forum to find it and then to understand what you've got. Also - there is a long thread and amazing about Dunkirk with lots of photographs. Search for Dunkirk on this site, but I bet you've done that already.
