Looking for more information on Plt. Off. Peter Richard Johnson, 40833, RAF 166, died 12 March 1940, Had never come across this name before in my research for the RAF 166 web site. Any information on aircraft, other crew etc. would be most appreciated.

The only No.166 Squadron aircraft to be lost on 12 March 1940 was Whitley III K8960 on a training flight. The aircraft took off from Abingdon at 1145 hrs but stalled while turning at 200 feet. The Whitley fell onto the Officers Mess.
P/O. R B. Vaux was lost along with two others.

Chorley in his RAF Bomber Command Losses Vol.1 gives no indication as to the other two lost.

    Hope this helps

    Regards
    Peter

    CWGC - Casualty Details

Inspired by Geoff's latest bit of wizardry, I zoomed in on my part of Belgium and found that my closest 'solitary' was a 1940 casualty.

    http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-cemeteries-war-memorial-research/47026-peace-perfect-peace-off-beaten-path.html

LAC Palmer was the only one of his three-man crew killed after having taken part in an attack on the Albert Canal / Maastricht bridges on 12th May 1940. The other two were captured which accounts for him being a solitary burial.

    World War 2 - No. 107 RAF Squadron, May/June 1940

I dragged the old BEF clunker out of the garage and rattled my way down into the Province of Liege. Apologies for the picture quality but I left the camera on the charger so had to make do with the phone.

It's a small village cemetery, typically for this area on the outskirts of the village rather than close to the church.

The corner holds the village war memorial although it has no names on it.

There was indeed only one easy to spot CWGC headstone (with a recentish cross of remembrance on it).

The grave has a nicely carved monument from the village, presumably made at the time and with a slight inaccuracy in his name.

This is the view over the cemetery wall looking west. It's quite easy to see how this part of the county fell so quickly.

I had cause to visit the second of the Cemeteries in Ibstock and found the enclosed Gravestones

Sgt Ratigan and Sgt Williamson were with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Williamson and Flight Lieutenant Engstrom have the same Date of Death and I seem to remeber someone telling me that a Lancaster came down near the village in 1943 although I'm trying to confirm that.

Navigator Corrie was from Devon and Aircraftman Statham was a local lad

A recent contact, Geoffrey Walker, was a witness to a tiger moth crash that killed Sgt Ratigan and has recently included his recollections for the Whitwich Church Magazine

"July the 2nd that year saw the Tiger Moth crash into Blackbrook reservoir. Several were doing low level flying as I described in the 1st episode, when the undercarriage of one aircraft touched the surface of the water. It was immediately brought down, and sank. The other planes in the flight landed nearby, the pilots along with an uncle of mine attempting a rescue. Using a rowing boat they searched in vain for the pilot."
