Help with service docs Mavis Post 5 in the thread above shows the marriage of my parents and records for my father the leave he had etc etc Understand you have financial constraints but sometimes you may need to bite the bullet TD
Thanks TD and Clive, I have already bought the death & marriage certificates for Dorothy and I have hit a blank wall, after searching for her parents and Tom's as well. Sometime you get on a roll and sometimes it is all uphill. I have more servicemen to research and therefore whatever I buy has to be able me to move along. I'm afraid that at the moment, Dorothy will have to wait for me to pay for more documents, but will keep looking in the meantime. Thanks again, Mavis
It does seem that the birth record (1897) for Dorothy Florence Monica Dayly is non existent; from her marriage certificate her father was John Dayly who died before 12 August 1929, presumably sometime between the two dates. The only suitable death I can find is in the 'Return of deaths at sea' showing a passenger on the ship 'Araby' who died 19 Dec 1910. His name is given as James Spierin alias John Dayly. The only information is that he was British, about 45 years old and died of consumption. His last place of abode is quoted as No. 6 Parish Ward, British Hospital, B. Aires. The death, under both names, is recorded in the 'British armed forces and overseas deaths and burials', year 1911. The location of his death is given as 1 degree 50 minutes N, 28 degrees 53 minutes W - which, by my calculation puts it bang in the middle of the Atlantic. Google Maps James Spierin is also listed as a death in the passenger lists for the Araby, register No. 118070, it docked at Liverpool on 6 January 1911 from Argentina. The Araby is a small cargo ship and the lists only show 5 other passengers - no Dorothy - it ran aground in 1916. https://wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?156737 Probably a complete red herring but, there are a few Spierins in Ireland, perhaps a lead that you my wish to follow up at some time.
Just found this, Weekly Irish Times, Saturday, January 22, 1911 Edit. There are some family trees on Ancestry that may show that this is indeed a red herring but possibly may be worth some investigation in view of his alias.
Thank you Tony56, thank you for going the extra mile, I would have no idea where to look for this. John DAYLY was a Music Teacher according to Dorothy's marriage cert. so would never have thought at look at Deaths at sea. Although I will be cautious as you say it may be a red herring. Thank you so much, regards, Mavis
That would be wonderful James, if you can find his records and second marriage. Dorothy and Tom married in 1929. Thanks, Mavis
Hi James, I am wondering if "Llanfynydd" might be the name of the house, as LLanfynydd is by Wrexham although perhaps Flintshire then, can you give me the link of Ancestry as I cannot find it. Many thanks, Mavis
Hi James, That's not him, as his father was William Thomas ROBERTS and he was a Moulder, which probably means in a steel works or the like. Thanks again, Mavis
Thank you James, it would be wonderful if we could match your Tom Roberts to Dorothy. I would be grateful for any information, Thank you again, Mavis
North Weald is in Essex and used to have a raf base there it’s now an industrial estate there were several in the area maybe they were both based there when they met?
I know we keep banging on about this but her service records would solve all this ( or a large part there of)
Yes, I have searched for it but in 1939 Dorothy was just an ordinary housewife doing Unpaid Domestic duties, so wasn't in the R.A.F. then. Thanks so much James for keeping on the trail of Dorothy and Tom. Regards, Mavis
James it is very kind of you to keep looking but if Mavis really wants to get to the bottom of this service records are the only way to go. And as i stated before if she did get married during here service it will more than likely be mentioned in the records regards Clive
James that site you quote well i shall say no more without the original from the Gov source round and round the garden I am afraid regards Clive
Thank you James for the information re Tom ROBERTS, I will add that to my research and see where it takes me. I will at some point, if I can't get anywhere, have to get his service records, but it will have to wait a while. Sometimes when you leave something and then go back, it takes on a new life, so lets hope so. Kindest regards, Mavis
Word of warning the raf redact everything so you may find black marks across the record for any personal information regards
