My mother was nine years old.

She remembered Neville Chamberlain's speech until she died in 2002, and the dead silence in her family's home and the whole neighborhood right after that. They lived in Manchester, so they didn't have the air raid sirens go off like they did in London.

It was an unbelievable shock. The King hit it right on the head later that day when he said in his speech, "For the second time in 20 years for most of us, we are at war with Germany."

Sunday 3 September, 1939 was one of those "where were you when it happened?" days. I was ten years old and the events of that day unalterably changed my life.

I was walking on my way home from Sunday school. When I stopped -- as usual -- at the Towneley (Burnley) railway station level crossing to watch trains, the signal box man lowered the window and shouted "that's it, we're at war with Jerry!".

There is the famous story of a minesweeper who was battling its way through a rough weather in the North sea,;which received a message on the 3rd sep.

The message informed them as at 1100 they were at war with germany and that they were to attack any German forces in the area.

The Skipper sent a reply which said: "willdo, but can we have our lunch first?"
