What sad and unexpected news. The tribute from Paul Reed extremely moving. Photo of Niccar with his son and grandson at Cassino is really poignant, you can see the affection and pride they had for him. His was certainly a life well lived and duty fulfilled.
    RIP old soldier.

We were very sad to hear of Don Carter's death; he was a very lively 'Vetran' on our recent Battlefield trip to Cassino.
I was his 'Coach Buddy' throughout. We spoke on many subjects and laughed a lot! He kept telling me that the real 'War Heroes' were those that died. I told him there were heroes that were still alive and he was one of those. I learnt a lot from Don on that tour!
My wife, Caroline, & I would like to send our condolences and sympathy to Don's wife, his son Don Jnr. and his grandson Jeff and their families.

While these are obviously days of sadness for Don's family, there is at least the comfort of knowing Don went out on a high immediately after a 'pilgrimage of the heart'. May they also remember these days as ones of pride, giving thanks for Don's achievements in life, knowing how much, and how widely he was respected. Don will be sadly missed.

'Twas his in youth o'er distant lands to stray,
Danger and death companions of his way.
Here in his native village, drooping age
Closed the lone evening of his pilgrimage.

Speak of the past, of names of high renown,
Or his brave comrades long to dust gone down,
His eye with instant animation glowed,
Though ninety winters on his head had snowed.

I would just like to thank Don's family for their kindness and warm welcome today for what essentially was a family and close friends affair - To make a stranger so welcome goes far in my mind as to what kind of a man Don Carter was.

I'm not going to go on about the service today but I would like to share something with you that was said at the service by a member of the family and I'm sure they won't mind me sharing it with you. I can't remember exactly what was said but it was one of many funny and light hearted stories told by Don to his family about his time in Italy and it went something like this:

Sergeant: "Carter ! Get your truck camouflaged so the enemy can't see us"

Private Carter: "Yes Sarge, what shall I camouflage it with?"

Sergeant: "I don't know, use your F***ing imagination" Sergeant looks around "Use that Haystack over there"

Apparently Don not wanting to upset his Sergeant any further promptly started to cover his truck with copious amounts of hay.

With the task completed I can imagine Don standing back with a big smile on his face and hands on hips completely satisfied that his truck now looked a haystack. Unfortunately that smile on his face was to suddenly change to a look of horror.....

Apparently some of the straw had found its way onto the engine manifold and ignited - Within a matter of seconds his truck and the straw was a blazing inferno with plumes of black smoke rising several hundred feet into the air informing the half of Italy where they were.

Don - I never knew you but you will be greatly missed and so will the stories you never told.

    RIP Mate :poppy:
