The teacher asked, 'Who was killed at the Battle of Bosworth?'
Little Irish lad, Sean calls out, 'Richard the Crap.'
'No, Sean, it was Richard the Third.'
'O, that's right, Richard the Turd, I knew it was some shite or other...'

    A much-misunderstood King I feel.
I was born in York, so I'm biased; but I can't help the feeling that the Tudors won that particular PR battle quite spectacularly.

There was a brilliant plaque in Leicester which commemorates where the town cheered out Richard on his way to Bosworth, and then cheered in Henry afterwards.
That's a mercantile town with an eye on the main chance that is.
"Come on the Winners!" (hmmm, that looks a bit odd written down.)

And the 'Richards' reference has surely been causing sniggering nationwide.

Well, now, the difficulty is that the winners write the history books ...........
And playwrights need to satisfy their Angels, or the money dries up .......

The programme - the research bit was interesting. An hour more of "he was someone's son, father..." blah, blah. And "it's made me want to know more about the man.." junk.

It is possible that he, the Tudor bloke and any number of their antecedent relatives and ancestors were murdering b......s. Would you really want to be DNA connected to that mob ?

Just announced Richard the Third of England has been awarded Hide and Seek Champion 1485!

They'll have to cover Richard III's grave if it rains but luckily they got a good deal, as now's the winter of our discount tents.

Well having read this all the way through while laughing my ass off.
I think there is a serious side to the story that is apparently been overlooked by all. The evedence is in the discovery of a direct line hier to the Throne of England has been found in Canada, the King is a Cunuck.
No Tim I didnt say 'Canuck' is 'King'
Perhaps we will need to be represented in the car park along with the rest of those honour bound to be there. IMHO

Tonight 2000hrs on More4: Richard III: The Unseen Story

I missed it the first time round. Sounds like there's a bit more emphasis on the science.

This still qualifies as the best post ever.

Furthermore, whilst it has become commonplace in recent years to claim that it was in fact, Henry Tudor who mudered the princes in the Tower the argument just doesn't hold water.

Firstly Richard was appointed Lord Protector of the elder boy and his Kingdom. However, he abducted the older boy when the boy was on his way to London to be crowned . The younger brother and his mother fled to the sanctuary of Westminster Abbey. Richard put her under increasing pressure to bring him to him so he could keep his older brother company. His mother resisted as much as she could but in the end relented. As soon as Richard had both boys in his 'care' he had their fathers marriage declared invalid, so bastardising the boys and ending their claim to the throne. He then makes himself regent and it is not long after this that we lose track of the boys.

However it wasn't Richard that had the marriage declared invalid, it was in fact a majority of Parliament that voted on it.

And Would they have had such a wonderful marriage if he had killed her two younger brother as soon as he got the throne?

Unless of course he simply lied to her and blamed Richard. ;)

So parliament voted on it against Richard's wishes or he simply didn't care? Does that sound like a plausible scenario?

This has given the long time search for King Alfred in Winchester a new keeness they have searched on and off since 1905. It is thought he is in or around St Bart's Church, Hyde just outside the North Gate - they too have a DNA sample - from Eadgyth in Magdeburg Germany. I know the area and I have been underground there - my father kept small quantities of explosives and his detonator room under the building (below) where he had his office for HMG. The churchyard is behind this building. Thinking about it - I attended a wedding at the church, must have been a good one - memory bit cloudy!

I see they've now dug someone up:

Diocese of Winchester | News Release: Winchester grave secured

If the body was under that slab, little chance of grave robbers?

let's see if we can profit from this, like Leicester.

Rest In Peace and all that.

I visited the Grey Friars site whilst in Leicester last week.
There were several archaeologists still digging the site and a couple of their colleagues giving explainations to the small crowd on the viewing area. Unfortunately the (otherwise quite good) information boards were a little out of date and did not cover the latest discoveries. The site plan was upside down (as viewed from the viewing gallery) and made orientation a little difficult!

There is a Judicial review taking place before a decision is made about where Richard III's remains will be interred but Leicester Cathedral (susprisingly small) has plans drawn up for a permament tomb.

Reported that a dinasour bone had been found - experts have said it is not true it's a fossil arm.
