What is the ribbon in the 2nd button of the tunic that this NCO is wearing?

It's a bit different from the ribbon that comes with the Iron Cross 2nd Class that is usually worn in the same button hole. I know this is a WW1 era photo, but see the man 2nd from the right for example. That's the Iron Cross 2nd Class, but it is a bit different from the man pictured above.

Well yes actually, but what I was trying to show here was that on the cap, between where the roundel is and the eagle/swastika device is was an emblem that I've never seen before. This was a still pic from the photo gallery of the movie "The Eagle Has Landed." Robert Duval is portraying the fictional Oberst Radl. And the extra cap device is something that I've never seen before. And I can't for the life of me copy the full photo to place here for observation.

Dang, that's it! I've never seen that device worn on an officers cap before. On his uniform there was the Edelweiss patch that I've seen many times before, but this is a new one (at least for me anyway).

    Don't forget it's a movie.
    May not be historically accurate.

Well the fictional Oberst Radl was wearing the Edelweiss patch on his tunic sleeve.
