By recommendation i have decided to move this to prewar. My Great Granddad (going back a bit now) apparently served in the RAF/RFC i have no knowledge as to where or when. His name was Reginald Harold Smart. I've tried looking at the national archives site but all i can see is a list for RAF officers. I'm guessing not all in the RAF/RFC would be in this list? Anyone got a clue of where to look next?
Tried to find him here but no luck. Must have served at Home, in UK, only. The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | Refine Browse Criteria=*
Do you have access to his medals? They will have his service number on them which should help with your research.

I also recently tried to find one and failed to find anything in the index, search on name (uncommon) and number failed.
No i don't have access to any medals or anything. I think my great uncle must of had them, who lived in America. As for RFC/RAF names i think the only lists you can search are officers, maybe he was a mechanic or something along them lines.
He could have been in the 'Royal Engineers' then when the 'RFC' was formed he tranferred/ cross badged or whatever its called .
